Maud Casey’s novel, The Man Who Walked
Away, topped more than 130 other
mid-career works to earn her the St. Francis

its sentences, by turns lyrical and hardnosed,
the depth of its research, and its subtly intricate structure,” said author Daniel
Torday (The Last Flight of Poxl West), one of the three jurors for the 2015 prize.
The Literary Prize mission is to support mid-career writers who don’t often
receive the support they need to write. Winners of the prize submit a third to fifth
work of fiction published within a two-year window. The next prize will be awarded
for a work published between June 2015 and May 2017.
The other authors on the shortlist were Paul Beatty, The Sellout, Stuart Dybek,
Paper Lantern, David Gilbert, & Sons, Marlon James, A Brief History of Seven
Killings, and René Steinke,
Friendswood. The authors spoke
at a panel at the book festi val.
Jones and Beatty both later
returned to St. Francis for

Macchiarola Archive Unveiled
On what would have been his 75th birthday, St. Francis College unveiled the
President Frank J. Macchiarola Digital Archive. “FJM’s daily life, and certainly
his writings, give shape to Francis’ proscription, ‘Practice the gospel always,
use words if necessary’,” said Dr. Macchiarola’s son, Michael Macchiarola,
as he laid out the lessons that can be learned by examining his father’s writing.
It took about three weeks for Data Conversion Laboratory (DCL) to scan and
organize thousands of documents; 38 years’ worth of photos, law review articles,
essays, news clips, and books written by and about Dr. Macchiarola.
The archive is a visual and written history of Dr. Macchiarola’s life and
accomplishments, from when he graduated from St. Francis in 1962 to his return
as President in 199 6. It includes his time as New York City Schools Chancellor,
Dean of Cardozo Law School, Chair of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s New York City
Charter Revision Program, member of Gov. George Pataki’s New York State
Commission on Education Reform and much more.
In attendance at the unveiling were a number of Dr. Macchiarola’s family
including his wife Mary, sons Michael and Joseph, brother Henry, and sister-inlaw Susan. Michael Macchiarola is a member of the St. Francis College Board
of Trustees. Access the Digital Archive at macchiarola.sfc.edu/omeka. ●
