Cardinal

A male Northern Cardinal poses on a Parke County tree limb in early February .

Cardinals are widespread in Indiana year round and it is not unusual to see 20 to 30 in a flock . Their brown-speckled blue-green eggs have been found in-nest from April to September , and by late March , breeding pairs can be heard and seen together , the flashy-red male often feeding the subtly-colored buffed-tan female while she tends to the nest . Cardinals ’ nests can often be identified by their common use of carefully-woven bark strips and grass ; they primarily eat seeds in the winter , but also love berries and insects and can be seen amidst poison ivy and ragweed , even on rotting muskmelons .
