The Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area , an Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife managed property , contributes to the public lands available to the citizens and visitors of the Wabash Valley . The area serves as part of the Healthy Rivers INitiative ( HRI ). HRI is Indiana ’ s largest land conservation initiative . It includes a partnership of resource agencies and organizations who are working with willing landowners to permanently protect over 43,000 acres located in the floodplain of the Wabash River and Sugar Creek and over 26,000 acres of the Muscatatuck River bottomlands .
Dewey Point , a Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department managed property named for Susie Dewey , is located at 110 E . National Avenue in West Terre Haute , IN and serves as the primary trailhead and access point to the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area and the Wabashiki Trail . Dewey Point currently offers parking , viewfinders , restrooms , and a shelter with plans to construct a canoe / kayak launch , and install interpretive signage . The Wabashiki Trail , situated on top of a US Army Corps of Engineers levee and an agricultural levee , currently includes five miles of multi-modal

trails that take the user through different scenic areas as well as along the Wabash River .
While at the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area , visitors can enjoy hiking , biking , bird watching , fishing , hunting , canoeing / kayaking , native gardens , and many public recreational programs offered through the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department . The wetland area offers many benefits to wildlife , waterfowl , and people . These benefits include : water quality improvement and sediment filtration , habitat for wildlife , flood reduction , water supply , opportunities for recreation , and beautiful scenery .
Dewey Point and the Wabashiki Trail have been developed and are maintained through the collaborative efforts of the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department , the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife , Wabash River Development and Beautification , Inc . ( RiverSCAPE ), Indiana State University , Vigo County , the City of Terre Haute , the Town of West Terre Haute , INDOT , the West Terre Haute Levee Association , Wabash Valley Community Foundation , and many other generous organizations .
