The first image I saw made me realise that I
wasdreaming.
ItwastotallyincomprehensiblehowIcouldfall
asleepinthemiddleofthemostimportant
matchIeversaw,butitwasso.Tomakethings
worse,therewasnowaytowakeup.
Lifeisquitestrangeattimes.
Indeed,often.
ImprisonedasIwasinthatweirddream,allI
coulddowasgiveupandwaitpatientlytoget
backtoreality.
Dreams,you'llknowaswellasI,areoftena
confusinganddisorderedjumbleofimagesthat
followoneanotherwithoutanyapparentlogic.
Yet,whatIwasseeingwastoomuchevenfora
dream!
BjornBorgwasarguingwiththechairumpire.
Crazy!
AsIsaid,Ihadfallenasleepsuddenlyafterthe
thirty-fourthandlastpointofthatendlesstiebreak.Itwasjusttooexciting.Borghadseven
chancestowinthetournamentforthefifth
consecutivetime,butMcEnroesavedthemall.
Someofthematchpointsweresimply
incredible.Thefirst,forexample,wassaved
withacrazybackhandpassingshot.The
Swede,whowassogoodatanticipatingevery
ballatthenet,hadnoideawheretheshotwas
going.
Inessence,theworldwasturnedupsidedown.
Onthisoccasion,defensecarriedtheday.But
justapointlater,theAmericanhitawinning
volleyfromtheseviceline.Incredible!
Evenmoreexcitingwasthatithadhappened
before,at5-4and40-15forBorg.Thencame
thedecisivegame,whichpushedthesettoa
tie-break.At5-6inthetie-break,Borgmoved
tohisrightonMcEnroe’sserve,andhitagreat
return.Itlookedliketheballwouldbe
unreturnable,butJohnnyMac’sWilson
somehowmanagedtoputitbackintoplayfor
thewinner.
Ahead7-6,Borgrushedthenetonagood
approach,onlytobeturnedbackbythelefthandedmagicofhisopponent.Atthat
moment,IthoughtthatBorg’sspiritwas
broken,andthattheAmericanwouldendit.
ButIwaswrong.Thetie-break’sdramawas
onlybeginningtounfold.Bjornearnedhisfifth
ChampionshipPointat10-9,buthitawayward
forehand.Hissixthoppotunity,at11-10,also
failedtoendthematch.
Borgattackedthenet,butMcEnroedrovehim
backtothebaseline.Indoingso,theSwede
lefttheentirecourtopenforJohnnyMac.He
letripwithabackhand,whichkissedthenet
andfelllimplytotheotherside.
Unfazed,Borgearnedaseventhchanceto
makehistory,onlytohavehisdreamsdashed
