representing Eastern and Western wisdom, wholeness cannot be mistaken for anything less than unambiguous self-possession. Many of us seek wholeness without really knowing what it is. But even blindly searching for wholeness endows our actions with some meaning and gives them direction. This is true because actions come with emotional responses that are the sensors of wholeness. When we examine our emotions intrepidly, we realize where we are on our paths of life. The way to wholeness may sound familiar to us: making choices of integrative intent that bind us closer to the world until the individual and the world fuse ethically-emotionally together in oneness. This requires a kind of probing appreciation for sustainable actions that travel karmically beyond themselves. But only the weak and radical exercise such responsibility, right? Besides, who would sacrifice social leverage for empathic sincerity in the rapacious pits of today’s economies? Sometimes we feels like every inch of our lives, from when we wake up to when we fall asleep, has been calculated by some economist, new-age guru, politician, scientist, or wizard behind a velvet curtain. And making even small compromises seems to fully sacrifice our comfort, convenience, and safety when our joys are reduced to trivial pleasures. We need insurance, lots of it, even assurance that we’ll be insured. But we don’t know how to change the system. We stay ignorant, we ignore, which is choice not mystery. As a result, authority and propaganda doesn’t dupe us—we know what ‘they’ are up to—but wholeness does. Like the forces of authority and propaganda, wholeness’s virtues of community and qualities of freedom must also trick people into thinking that those virtues and qualities lead to holistic transformation and lasting happiness. Who but fools, though, are tricked for—and for the—good?
