Edward Cheserek Wins Another National Title

Cross Country Team looks to continue success with several new freshmen joining the team this year
We have to say that we will miss Edward Cheserek next season, as he graduates with the Class of 2013, having established new school, state, and national records, and moves on to college in Oregon. At the beginning of the season, the team got a preview of what it will be like without Edward, since he sat out for several weeks to prepare for the SATs. The team responded with some good results from‘ veterans’ like Jaquan Roberts, and also from the contributions of new runners, several of whom are freshmen. One of them, freshman Scott Bamberg, got the attention of news reporters when he completed a race barefoot, since he lost his running shoes in the middle of the race on a muddy track.
Upon returning, Edward quickly picked up more records and medals, and qualified again for the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championship in San Diego, CA. There, he ran against a very competitive field, and won his second national championship. Edward’ s career record at St. Benedict’ s and the courses where he ran: Edward owns the 3.1 mile course records at Brookdale Park, Holmdel Park, Garret Mountain, Blair, Warinanco, Goddard Park( R. I), Sunken Meadow Park( N. Y.) and Van Cortlandt’ s 2.5 mile course in The Bronx. He broke the records at Warinanco and Blair twice, while establishing a new course record at Brookdale all three times he won the Essex County Championships.
Edward’ s season accomplishments, as well as his academic record, were recognized when he was awarded Gatorade National Cross Country Runner of the Year, at a ceremony at Conlin Auditorium.“ I want to thank everyone in this community for giving me this opportunity to be here to continue with my education and to expose my talent,” said Cheserek.“ I am very grateful and thankful to everyone who has made this possible- it’ s been a dream come true.”
