MY RESOLUTION
Meet Millie Smith, admin officer for Tees Skills’ publisher Resolution Media and Publishing.
Millie was still only 16 when she joined Resolution on a two-year admin apprenticeship, while enjoying day release to study at Middlesbrough College.
Having completed her apprenticeship before her 19th birthday – with three distinctions – she’ s now a permanent employee with the Middlesbrough business.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what made you decide to do an apprenticeship instead of going to college or university?
I went to Hemlington Hall Academy for my primary school and for secondary school I attended Outwood Academy Acklam. I live at home in Acklam. I decided to do an apprenticeship to improve my skills, experience and especially my mental health, as I felt the classroom wasn’ t for me.
What kind of things did you get to do during your admin apprenticeship?
When I first started, the team were planning for two awards events. Right from the start, I was dealing with lots of different stakeholders, designing graphics and trophies, learning how to use platforms like Excel and uploading posts to social media. Every day was different – which was something I loved!
What did you enjoy most about working in a real business environment?
How much there was to know and learn about businesses on Teesside. As a 16-year-old who had just left school, I didn’ t realise the number of opportunities we have on our doorstep. And I took confidence from attending events and realising how friendly and welcoming our community is.
