n exciting urban park regeneration project on the banks of the River Tees is paving the way for a future of opportunity in Stockton .
After realising he couldn ’ t just walk into a job , it was a chance introduction to Esh Construction that opened his eyes to a career in construction .

Stockton Waterfront will replace the former Castlegate Shopping Centre , which has been demolished to make way for a series of impressive open spaces , an amphitheatre and unique play areas . With the council recently unveiling a 25-year vision for Central Stockton and North Thornaby , there ’ s lots to look forward to .
And people working in the construction industry will play a very important role in what ’ s to come .
Esh Construction - a North-East firm that takes pride in encouraging young people to join the sector from an early age – has been on site since December 2023 to build the new urban park .
Tom Wilkinson is Esh ’ s project manager , and he ’ s proud of the part he ’ s playing in providing a transformational new space for residents to enjoy .
Born in County Durham , Tom graduated from Northumbria University with a BSc in geography .
He said : “ I went to university because my dad told me I should , but I didn ’ t know what I wanted a career in .
“ I enjoyed geography at school , had an interest in science and the field trips appealed . After several months out of work after university , I secured an interview as a trainee engineer with Esh ’ s civil engineering department .”
Tom has worked his way up the ranks at Esh through the last 12 years and has worked across key Tees Valley projects , most notably the construction of the state-ofthe-art gatehouse at Teesworks .
Tom now takes control of the day-to-day work taking place at Stockton Waterfront – from ensuring all work takes place safely , to meeting with those delivering work on site and dealing with financial enquiries , to managing the programme of work and monitoring the delivery . It ’ s a fast-paced environment !
He added : “ This project is just the start of a changing geography for the town . There really is a mindset for change in the region that will bring Stockton to the fore and will inevitably result in employment opportunities for the town ’ s residents .
“ There is a massive opportunity for a variety of construction roles for all , from quantity surveying and engineering roles through to administration and business development . There ’ s more to construction than people may think . It ’ s an industry where you can build a lifelong and enjoyable career .”
