NEWS TEES BUSINESSES BACK AWARDS C hemical giant SABIC is the latest company to support the first- ever Teesside business awards for women by sponsoring one of the categories. Tees Business will host the Tees Businesswomen Awards at a glitzy ceremony in Wynyard Hall’s Conservatory Room on Thursday November 8 this year. SABIC, whose UK headquarters are based at Wilton, near Redcar, is sponsoring the ‘Inspiring Others’ category for the historic event. Nicola Duffey, senior manager HR at SABIC, said: “We’re proud and delighted to be supporting the very first business awards event for women in the Tees region. “Within SABIC we want to create more role models, so young women see it as a place where they want to work, that they see they myriad of career opportunities, no matter what your gender. “We're tying in with the Tees Businesswomen Awards to create more role models for women who are pursuing a career in industry.” Other firms sponsoring the first-ever Tees Businesswomen Awards include: • Cornerstone Business Solutions (Business of the Year category) The firm’s managing director Chris Petty said: “We think this is a fantastic idea. It's something great for us to get involved with. “It’s a new awards ceremony, a first for Teesside to recognise women in the region, and as the region's leading IT company it's fantastic to get involved. “I hope the awards will bring more business-minded local women into the spotlight and show what can be achieved.” • RMS Recruitment (Best Newcomer) The firm’s recently appointed operations manager Matthew Telling said: “We see this is an opportunity to inspire the next generation. “There are some exceptional businesswomen doing some brilliant things. Their achievements should be celebrated, which is why we’re really proud to be part of the very first Tees Businesswomen Awards. “We’re very much looking forward to meeting the other sponsors and guests for what promises to be an inspirational event.” • Punch Robson Solicitors (SME of the Year) Managing partner Elaine McLaine-Wood said: “Being a female managing partner, which is quite rare in the law profession, we want to celebrate the success of women in the area. “We have a number of female clients who run their own businesses, so we feel Businesswomen Awards will hopefully be the catalyst. And we’re urging everyone – men and women – to get involved.” Laura Woods, director of The Forge, Teesside University’s business hub, and chair of DigitalCity, added: “Women are the silent stars of the Tees Valley economy. “They’re what keeps the economy going, they’re the opportunity of the future, but the trouble is they don't really have a voice at the moment. “What we need to do, and what they need to do collectively, is make sure they do get their voice heard and the rest of us listen to it. “If we do that, we’ll make a massive impact on the opportunities currently facing the Tees Valley.” Tees Business co-editor Dave Allan added: “We’re absolutely delighted that the very first Tees Businesswomen Awards has quickly won the support of Teesside University, which is very much one of the Tees region’s beacons. “To have two high-profile female leaders from the university talk so passionately about raising the profile of women in our region, and supporting our idea to help that, is a major boost for our event and we’re sure it will help to inspire women and businesses from around the region to get involved.” it's important they get the recognition they deserve. “There are other female business awards in other areas, and I think it's important that we applaud our own, so we’re absolutely delighted and extremely proud to get involved with the first-ever Tees Businesswomen Awards.” SABIC senior HR manager Nicola Duffey.
