WELCOME Welcome C O N T E N TS 10 FANTASY FOOTBALL From Middlesbrough to Miami via Madrid. Presenting Teessider Kay Murray… Welcome to the Spring 2018 issue of Tees Life – Teesside’s lifestyle magazine. M iddlesbrough, Madrid and Miami. It’s not often you see those three names in the same sentence. But the three M’s knit together the incredible story of Kay Murray, the cover star of this issue of Tees Life. Back in the Summer of 2003, Middlesbrough Football Club had never won a major trophy and Kay was out of work. Less than 12 months later, Boro lifted silverware in the shape of the Carling Cup, while their young fan had begun her own remarkable change in fortunes after landing a job with the club’s television station, Boro TV. The launchpad to a career that means she’s now far more famous to US-based football fans than she is in her own hometown was the day she was one of the winners of a Boro Babe modelling competition run by Middlesbrough FC. As the club’s Media and Communications manager at the time, I was one of those who chose Kay to be a model for the new-look Boro kit. She was slightly older, definitely more confident and certainly more ambitious than her fellow models – but no one could ever have predicted what she would go on to achieve as a football presenter. Though I’m happy to take just a little credit for giving her a kickstart! Tees Life is all about celebrating what’s great Tees Life co-editors Dave Allan (left) and Martin Walker. about Teesside – the fantastic places for food and entertainment, the wonderful homes and lifestyle and the amazing success stories of our people. When I tell people that our aim is keep featuring Teesside’s personalities as our cover stories in Tees Life, I’m occasionally given a withering look, a knowing smile and words to the effect of “Well, you’ll soon run out of cover features then.” The list of names on my office wall of Teessiders we’d like to interview in future issues tells a very different story. Those names will keep us going for years to come. There are famous names – sportspeople, actors and actresses, musicians, artists and comedians – but many others whose story is equally fascinating. And we do plan to be around for many years to come, celebrating all that makes Teesside such a fantastic to place to live. We hope you enjoy reading the Spring 2018 issue of Tees Life. As passionate Teessiders, putting the magazine together is a true labour of love for my co-editor Martin Walker and I. And we plan to go on expanding it, shouting from the rooftops about all that’s good about the area we love.
