Martin Walker takes a
look at some Autumn
and Winter holiday
destinations for you to
consider this year...
Get away
for half-term
M
any of you will be gearing up
for your summer getaway –
counting down the “sleeps”
until cabin crew open the doors and you’re
hit with that welcoming wave of warmth.
But for some of you, the much-needed
break will have already been and gone,
now but a distant memory as you return
to your hectic daily work-life cycle.
For families, the October half-term
break provides a window of opportunity
to escape the holiday blues. And as the
nights draw in, it’s one last chance to top
up the tan before Winter sets in.
The Canary Island of Tenerife provides
sunnier climes for us to enjoy almost all-
year-round. Although the Atlantic breeze
will make for a cooler evening, day-time
averages in October peak at 28°C and
average 26°C, with lows of 21.
One high-end destination we’ve picked
out is the five-star Ritz-Carlton Abama,
which enjoys a cliff-top location with
views of the Atlantic and La Gomera
Island.
Elegant Moorish architecture and
tropical gardens create a serene ambience,
while golfers will love the challenge of
the course designed by Ryder Cup player
Dave Thomas.
A secluded golden sand beach and one
swimming pool for every day of the week
– including an infinity pool – are perfect
for unwinding, while this sophisticated
retreat also boasts 10 dining venues, some
of them Michelin-starred.
One reviewer said of the Ritz Carlton:
“It’s pure heaven for those of us who
dislike noise, stress and busy resorts. We
wanted a short break with winter sun,
swimming, good food and a relaxing
atmosphere and Abama ticked all those
boxes.”
Tenerife will provide you with the
perfect half-term week to re-charge the
batteries before preparing for, dare we say
it, Christmas...
Thailand for two
this Christmas
T
he Christmas period provides
another fantastic opportunity to get
away from the pressures of work.
You have to go further to find the heat, of
course, with far-flung places like Thailand,
Dubai and Australia proving popular
Winter destinations for Brits.
Virgin Holidays’ platinum-rated Slate
Hotel is an exotic oasis of calm and
tranquillity, situated just behind the
secluded Nai Yang beach, with its luxurious
facilities ensuring you’ll have everything
you need for a stay that is both authentic
and indulgent.
Close to some of Phuket’s finest beaches,
the Slate boasts beautiful tropical gardens
amidst a backdrop of dense rainforest,
creating a true Thai experience.
December is the coolest period of the
year in Phuket, with highs of 31°C, lows of
21°C and an average of 26°C.
