t’s hard to argue with Gary Lumby when he says “It’s
got everything you need” as he shows us around his
sumptuous six-bedroom home, Red Wynd.
Overlooking the pretty third green of Wynyard
Golf Club, the mansion that’s home to well-known
businessman Gary, his wife Hayley and their Miniature
Yorkshire Terrier Henry features four lounges, a snooker
room, six bedrooms – four en-suite – and a spiral designer
staircase into a gym that would be the envy of many health
clubs.
“It’s been a great home for us,” says Gary, who works as a
non-executive director with 17 companies across Teesside,
the North-East and beyond.
A former banker, Gary advises a long list of local
businesses including Active Chartered Financial Planners,
Erimus Insurance Brokers, Biochemica, Psyche, CP Waites,
Techconsult and Simply Thank You, while he and Hayley
own four companies of their own.
When they’re not at work, they return to the luxury
of their impressive property on The Wynd, a house they
bought 12 years ago after Duncan Bannatyne made them
an offer they couldn’t refuse on the six-bedroom Georgian
property they’d built “from scratch” in the nearby woods at
Gunners Vale.

“We’d only been in the house six months when Duncan,
who we knew, came in for a coffee one Sunday morning and
said ‘I can’t find a house but yours is lovely – I’m wondering
if you’d sell it?’ I told him everything has a price. So we sold
our house to Duncan and put an offer in for this one, which
we’d always had our eye on.”
But this was not a case of love at first sight.
“We’d always admired the look of the house from the
exterior but inside was disappointing,” says Gary. “It needed
a lot doing to it because it was quite dated so we thoroughly
refurbished it. We completely gutted it.”
The greatest result of their work was a striking extension
featuring Hayley’s impressive walk-in dressing room that
would be the envy of any woman, plus a first floor lounge
and balcony. Head downstairs via a designer spiral staircase
and you enter perhaps the greatest feature of this great
home – a fully-fitted gymnasium, measuring nearly 550 sq
ft and boasting floor-to-ceiling views of the garden to three
sides with bi-fold doors opening onto a private rear patio
and hot tub.
“If you haven’t got a hot tub I’d recommend it,” Gary
enthuses. “There’s nothing like a glass of wine in the hot tub
on a Friday night in a secluded area of the garden. The two
of us go in there together and catch up because we’re often
