M
y mam Ivy – all four foot eleven
and three quarters (don’t forget
the three quarters!) of her – can
only be described as a pocket rocket. Despite
the small stature she’s a force to be reckoned
with. A look from those steely blue eyes or
a deepening of the voice had me and my
sister quaking with fear. Yet she was… is…
always there with a hug and a heart full
of love. Ivy sums up the Teesside woman
completely – strong, caring, no nonsense.
Despite a life that has been very tough at
times, she shrugs her shoulders, slips on her
size threes and says, “Let’s get it done then!”
What would we do without our mams and
those who are surrogate mams – the nanas,
aunts and formidable females who brought
us up? Even our wildly successful cover
star Sara Davies (page 12) pays homage to
her mam Susan and our Big Tees columnist
Harry Pearson paints a vivid and hysterical
