HAIR Summer Styling Introducing our new hairstyling columnist Janice Auton, founder of the multi-award-winning Poppys Hairdressing of Stockton and Hartlepool. Holiday hair can be a challenge. Having recently returned from a cheeky four-day break in the sun with a girlfriend I am going to share some of my holiday hair tips. F irstly, invest in a fabulous hat - the shape of mine is flat at the back so I can chill on a sun lounger. I bought mine from Accessorize. So, quite simply, on a morning get your hair up in a bobble, add a spray of a UV filter hairspray - I use Eufora Elevate - hat on and now my headgear becomes my hairstyle. Those with short hair should hunt out some sun-protecting hair gel, slick your hair back, hat on… time for the pool. Check out the information on the back of your hair products as it will always tell you if they contain UV filters or, of course, ask your favourite hairdresser. It’s so important to wet your hair before you swim. Your hair can only absorb so much water so let it be chlorine-free. That’s why those showers are there, as well as to wash off any unwanted suntan lotion. Always wash your hair with chlorine shampoo within 24 hours of swimming. Did you know chlorine dries the natural oils of the hair, causing it to go dry and go brittle? I use Eufora Nourishing Urgent Repair Treatment, but there are many other great brands. Blonde hair sometimes starts getting a green hue in water. However, the cause is not the chlorine but oxidised metals in the water (mainly copper), so rinse your hair straight away. Applying conditioner before swimming will help to seal the hair cuticle and can prevent the copper from binding to the hair. So, time to style! If you have a few natural waves, go for the beachy wave look, pop in some mousse and scrunch it without a hairdryer (think “making a crumble mix”!) then, when dry, if you want to soften the look simply tweak the ends with your smoothers. I love a cheat such as a clip-in hair piece. Tie your hair up in a bobble and simply clip in! I shop at Additional Lengths in Stockton and Faking It in Hartlepool, who both have great, cost-effective selections. Best not to buy online, however, as you need to get a good colour match. If you want a finished look and can’t be bothered to blow dry all your hair, concentrate on the front and sides and let the rest air dry softly, fluffing the back with your fingers. We all have our favourite shampoos and conditioners but in summertime try to choose one that hydrates your hair - and I recommend that you treat your hair to a weekly hair mask. At Poppys Hairdressing, we choose Eufora hair products as they are all based on organic aloe - and we love that they have a vegan range. Ongoing…when your hair is wet, squeeze dry gently to avoid friction. Never ruffle with a towel as this causes tangles and split ends. Always leave your hair to air dry for at least 10 minutes before using your hairdryer – you’ll be amazed at the difference this will make to the condition of your hair over a period of time.
