Business support is crucial for muchloved Tees charity

Butterwick chief executive Graham Leggatt-Chidgey with Tees athlete Matty Hynes at the launch of the charity’ s Great North Run fundraising at Rockliffe Hall.

A

much-loved Teesside charity says the business support it enjoys is vital in being able to meet its £ 4m-a-year running costs.
The Butterwick Hospice has been supporting local people across the North East for over 30 years.
The hospice, a registered charity, is based in Stockton and Bishop Auckland and provides specialist palliative care and support to local people, from the youngest baby to the oldest pensioner.
All services are provided free of charge to over 2,000 patients and their loved ones each year.
Butterwick receives approximately 25 % of its overall funding from negotiated contracts with the NHS, but the remaining £ 3m it has to generate from within the communities it serves.
Butterwick’ s chief executive, Graham Leggatt-Chidgey, said:“ Butterwick Hospice is an important part of the fabric of the communities we serve.
“ We are a charity but we are also a large employer with over 200 staff providing services around the clock, every day of the year.
“ We also have over 650 volunteers who give their time and expertise freely to the charity every week.”
The hospice team also successfully runs a number of its own businesses including a dozen high street shops with warehousing, two weekly lotteries and a holistic therapies and training social enterprise to help raise funds.
Butterwick has always acknowledged the support of the local business community and during recent years it has developed ways to ensure that those businesses which do support the hospice are able to benefit from their association in more tangible ways.
Leggatt-Chidgey added:“ The charity is highly respected and well loved within the communities it freely serves. It is a well known, high-profile brand with which companies are proud to be aligned.
“ It is important for companies today to be able to demonstrate to their customers, shareholders and suppliers that they are supporting their local communities and effectively addressing corporate social eesponsibility.
“ To facilitate this, the hospice has developed a comprehensive corporate engagement programme which enables businesses of all sizes to formally support and work with the charity in a variety of ways.”
Those firms supporting the hospice receive high-profile recognition, including invitations to a variety of quality networking events and receptions.
Through these invitation-only events a lot of new business opportunities have been created over breakfasts, lunches, evening drinks and black tie events – all provided free of charge to the businesses who are actively supporting the charity.
