lans have been drawn up to build a new
road bridge at one of the region’s key
regeneration sites.
The proposals would see the creation of a
new three-lane lifting bridge at Middlehaven
Dock, with associated highway and
infrastructure improvements.
The £9m scheme represents the
next major phase in the regeneration of
Middlehaven, and will provide vital access
to the site to the north of the Riverside
Stadium.
The bridge will create a new road route via
Shepherdson Way, taking motorists, cyclists
and pedestrians from the A66 across the
dock and past Anish Kapoor’s monumental
Temenos sculpture.
The TV gantry is
now situated in the
Riverside’s East
Stand.
T
he Riverside Stadium underwent
a £6 million facelift during the
summer as Middlesbrough FC
prepared for the return of Premier
League football.
The work included the creation of new
media and broadcast facilities, renovation of
the tunnel and dressing room area, a newlook reception and refurbished hospitality
facilities.
Newly promoted clubs have to meet
new criteria upon promotion to the Premier
League, so new dug-outs have been installed
along with a new players’ entrance and a
new-look West Stand reception.
Two new TV studios have been installed
on either side of the Riverside’s big screen,
while the outside broadcast compound,
used by matchday TV broadcasters, has been
moved to a new location in the South East
Corner of the stadium.
The TV gantry has also been moved from
the West Stand to the East Stand, with the
main camera positions now pointing towards
the main stand.
See pages 6 and 38 for more details
about the work.
PSYCHE’S £300K
EXPANSION
SUPPORTS GROWTH
Psyche, the luxury designer retailer, is
investing more than £300,000 to expand
its Middlesbrough premises to facilitate
growing sales, particularly online.
Online transactions through its state-ofthe-art website account for nearly a quarter
of all sales and are rapidly growing.
The extension will provide a buyers’
office, offices for support staff, a
boardroom and enhanced facilities for the
growing staff team.
Psyche has already appointed six
new members of staff and plans more
recruitment in the near future.

New season, new look

The new crossing will replace
the existing footbridge which was
installed following the removal of an
earlier swing bridge by the Teesside
Development Corporation.
The plans – drawn up by leading
civil engineers Balfour Beatty and
Arup – will boost existing Middlehaven
enterprises and play a vital role in supporting
proposals such as the snow centre on the
north side of the dock.
The development will also create further
opportunities for the regeneration of the dock
as a marina and centre for water sports and
leisure use.
Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough
Council’s executive member for regeneration,
said: “Middlehaven has really started to
gather momentum in the last few years, and
we’re now seeing the sort of proposals that
will take it on to the next level.
“It’s one of the region’s most important
regeneration areas, so it’s vital that we invest
in it to help Middlesbrough’s development as
the city heart of the Tees Valley.”
Investment paying off
in Middlesbrough
The recent regeneration work in
Middlesbrough’s Queen’s Square is already
having a positive effect on the town.
Close to the train station and Boho
buildings, Queen’s Square is at the heart of
Middlesbrough’s business district and offers
a prime, central location for local and national
organisations.
