GUESS WHO YOU VOTED TEESSIDE’ S MOST OUTSTANDING BUSINESSMAN!
I always find it hugely encouraging to flick through the pages of Teesside’ s only business magazine and read all the positive news from around the region.
I also particularly enjoy hearing from some of the many inspirational people who are leading the way – the doers who just get on with it.
Running a business, of any size, has its ups and downs and we all face challenges every day.
It’ s interesting to hear that many people say we’ re still waiting for the impact of the Brexit vote in June. But there are many firms, like our own, which is already feeling it.
Since the end of June, we’ ve generally had price increases from virtually every supplier, averaging 9-10 %, when normally it would be 2-3 % every couple of years. They’ re all putting it down to the weakness of the pound, and the majority of goods that come into us from abroad are bought in dollars or Euros, so I can see why it’ s causing many firms a lot of problems.
We haven’ t passed any costs on to our customers yet, and we’ re trying not to. Instead, we’ re looking for efficiencies in other areas – utilities, courier charges and anything that takes costs out of the business.
But if we didn’ t have Brexit to deal with, there would undoubtedly be other challenges,
WELCOME
FOREWORD by Alex Ingham
Welcome to the Winter 2016 issue of Tees Business – the magazine’ s biggest issue yet at 60 pages.
USE TEES BUSINESS FOR YOUR MARKETING
Tees Business is a B2B magazine delivered FREE to the business communities of Teesside, covering Middlesbrough, Stockton, Yarm, Wynyard, Billingham, Redcar & Cleveland, Hartlepool and Stokesley.
and the strength of a business is measured on how you respond to those challenges.
Teesside has had its fair share of struggles – not least the collapse of SSI – but there’ s a whole heap of good, positive stories about businesses creating jobs on Teesside. And it’ s not just from our big employers – the likes of PD Ports, Nifco etc – there are lots of small to medium sized firms showing that, if you’ re positive and you’ re focused on your growth, you can achieve and do well – so stay focused, and stay positive!
I’ m also excited by the growing digital sector on Teesside. You look at what’ s happening at the Boho Zone in Middlesbrough and the new Boho Five building. We’ re used to reading from the so-called go-to digital experts in London, Manchester and Leeds, but it’ s really encouraging to see our own digital sector thriving here now.
While every area will always have its challenges, I think generally we can be positive that things are definitely on the up here on Teesside.
I hope you, like me, enjoy reading this latest issue of Tees Business, which provides firms with a unique platform to celebrate their success stories. Alex Ingham Managing director, M. I. Supplies
