The search is over Calm Digital, based in Middlesbrough’s Boho One, has been in the digital sector for 11 years, specialising in web, software, mobile apps and SEO (search engine optimisation). Tees Business spoke to members of Calm’s SEO team Fiona Watson and Amy Baker, plus business development director Helen Stewart to find out more about the company and what SEO involves. Tell us about Calm Digital. Fiona: Calm Digital was created in 2009 and has gone from strength to strength over the years, providing services such as websites, software, mobile apps and SEO. We work with some amazing clients across the UK and internationally from a vast range of industries. For those who aren’t sure, what is SEO? Amy: SEO is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing a site’s visibility to users in search engines. There are four key areas of SEO - technical, content, strategy and outreach and PR. SEO is a long- term investment. However, a good strategy results in organic growth for your business. What are your thoughts on organic search versus paid search? Helen: It’s a common myth that running SEO and pay per click (PPC) campaigns simultaneously can have negative effects on business. As long as both strategies are aligned, both channels can work in harmony to get you great results from your website. Both channels require specialists in particular areas to carry out effective strategies, so make sure you’re clued up on how both can work for your business before you rule anything out. 38 | Tees Business Which businesses can benefit from SEO? Fiona: SEO can prove hugely beneficial for a range of businesses from different industries, sectors and varying in sizes. At Calm, our portfolio of SEO clients is vast, featuring anything from solicitors to plumbers, fashion to vehicle bodywork specialists and much more. No matter whether you’re a start-up or well-established business, a thorough and bespoke SEO strategy can excel your presence organically. Why has Calm Digital decided to specialise in SEO? Helen: We have specialised in SEO for 11 years now. However, over the past year, we’ve focused on expanding the team and their specialisms. In having these key members of the team, we were able to expand the SEO services and packages. Our SEO manager, Fiona, is keen to get the team more exposure so keep an eye out for us at exhibitions and conferences. The hardest thing about working in the digital sector? Amy: The digital sector in Middlesbrough has so much to offer and there is a wide variety of scope for businesses. For us, especially with SEO, it can be challenging to change the perception that potential clients may have following a previous bad experience. SEO is a long-term investment and can at times be more difficult to forecast. However, we believe that transparency and a fantastic team of specialists who can put clients at ease is the recipe for success. What does 2020 and the future hold for Calm Digital? Helen: 2020 is a year of growth for Calm Digital. The leadership team is looking at how the company can expand and grow with a clear strategy. At the moment the main focus is to work harmoniously with our current clients, ensuring websites and software system development is to the highest standard and that we are achieving the best organic results possible for our clients. It’s a very exciting time for our team, we offer an excellent service and our clients are at the heart of everything we do.
