INSPIRING WOMEN RECOGNISED ON PROJECT’S FIFTH BIRTHDAY I nspiring women from across Redcar and Cleveland have received recognition at a special ceremony. Nearly 100 people attended the annual Inspiring Women Awards at Redcar’s Wilton Centre as the ceremony celebrated its fifth birthday. Taking home the Mo Mowlam Award, the main prize of the night, was Tina Jackson, who also won the Women in Leadership Award, sponsored by SABIC. Tina founded The Link project in 2010 to raise the profile of children’s mental health and its effects on families, relationships, education and communities. The Link has since become an incorporated Community Interest Company and has helped more than 500 children and young people who require emotional and mental health support. Other winners included: > Amanda Smithson won the Individual Achievement Award, sponsored by Beyond Housing New rig takes students to the dizzy heights of their future career Passers-by at Redcar and Cleveland College might have noticed a new addition to the grounds – a 30-foot outdoor industrial training rig. Created to replicate the demands of working in an industrial environment, the facility will support training including decommissioning, rope access and industrial competency, as well as extending the college’s working at heights and confined spaces training. Principal Jason Faulkner said: “The training site will open up further opportunities not just for our students and young people but also those who are out of work and looking to retrain or upskill.” > Kendra McCormick won the Volunteer Award, sponsored by PD Ports > Leigh Smith won the Women in Business Award, sponsored by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council > Rayven Skye Masters won the Young Woman Award, sponsored by Taylor Wimpey > Annalice Sibley who won the Inspiring Others Award, sponsored by Sembcorp Former winners have helped the event’s success by contributing their talents each year. Julie Donaldson, a radio presenter for Zetland FM and former Inspiring Women award winner, hosts the event, and Ruth Fox, a winner from the inaugural year in 2016, provides the catering through her charity organisation Footprints in the Community. Ruth Fox, chair of the Inspiring Women Steering Group, said: “This is such a wonderful event, and it just keeps getting better and better.” DRIVING JOB ENDS FIVE-YEAR WAIT A dad has become the 500th person helped into work by the East Cleveland Training and Employment Hub. Mark Playforth, 50, heard about the employment hub, in Skinningrove after five years of unemployment and is now celebrating after landing a job as an HGV driver at PD Ports. The East Cleveland Training Hub provides training and career advice for local people. The hub is supported by East Cleveland Villages Big Local, part- funded by Sirius Minerals and delivered by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, in partnership with Jobcentre Plus. MP calls on businesses to consider apprenticeships Redcar MP Jacob Young has urged businesses to benefit from booming Teesside by supporting apprenticeships and technical training. The 27-year-old former chemical industry apprentice was speaking on a return visit to TTE Technical, where he trained, and which was recently acquired by Middlesbrough College Group. Mr Young urged employers to use apprenticeships and soon-to- be-launched T Levels to capitalise on the wealth of opportunities taking off on Teesside, citing the likes of the SSI site takeover, Middlesbrough’s digital cluster and the National Horizons Centre. Middlesbrough College’s acquisition of TTE Technical safeguarded more than 70 jobs. Employment team celebrates 300th success A man who moved to Grangetown with no job, no contacts and limited qualifications has secured a highly prized apprenticeship. Macauley Irving, 23, is the 300th young person to be helped into work, education or training by the Redcar and Cleveland Council’s Youth Employment Initiative (YEI) team. He started a new career as an apprentice for the international logistics company Den Hartogh at Wilton as a warehouseman and forklift truck driver. The YEI team helped him gain qualifications including paying for courses, improving his interview technique and helping him with transport and interview clothing costs.
