GUEST FOREWORD by Prof Jane Turner OBE DL
Welcome to the autumn 2019 issue of Tees Business –
the voice of business for the Tees region
T
his issue of Tees Business features the
results of the annual poll revealing the
region’s most inspiring business leaders,
as voted for by their contemporaries. To see
no fewer than 12 women featured in this
year’s top 30 represents a significant shift
after only three made the list two years ago.
I am extremely humbled and delighted to
be in the company of such notable individuals.
The Tees Businesswomen Awards dinner
on October 24 will provide an opportunity to
further showcase the fabulous women of the
region.
Teesside University is seriously committed
to the region in which it resides, driving
positive economic and social change, acting
as an engine for regeneration and a magnet
for investment, ideas, skills development and
innovation.
In its position as an anchor institution,
the university has a significant impact on
the business community, driving business
creation, growth and jobs.
During the last two years alone, the
university has worked with 791 organisations
across 1,446 programmes and projects. This

The university’s 2018 bi-annual economic
impact study reported a contribution to
the national GVA of £125m – £90m in the
Tees Valley – and £18m of this attributed to
‘knowledge transfer’ activities.
In a policy environment which devolves
more responsibility for economic growth and
business support to UK regions, universities
have unique strengths in knowledge, research,
innovation and the capability to support jobs,
knowledge and wealth creation.
As we enter a new academic year, Teesside
University looks forward with enthusiasm,
continuing to work in partnership to make an
enduring difference to this remarkable region.
A year of opportunity awaits.
