Pie Jackers’ husband and wife team, Neil and

Albert North in Middlesbrough.
Middlesbrough’s Albert
North welcomes more
businesses – including
artisan pie makers
T
he rebirth of Middlesbrough’s
historic quarter has reached a
further milestone as it gets ready to
welcome more businesses.
Albert Road, which has been transformed
into Albert North, has been through a period
of significant regeneration over the past
12 months, with many of the town’s iconic
buildings renovated to create a bustling
commercial district.
Award-winning artisan pie maker, Pie
Jackers, is opening its first bakery and
diner at 17 Albert Road in the former court
chambers.
The brainchild of husband and wife, Neil
and Julie Fletcher, the company burst on to
the local food scene in 2016 after they quit
their jobs and began selling their handmade
gourmet pies at farmers’ markets and food
events.
The couple’s plans for the historic stone-
fronted building include a bakery counter
and licensed casual dining as well as a
takeaway service.
“It’s the most beautiful building, it’s got
bags of character, and we’re already well
into the refit, which includes a fun twist on
its historical links to the courts,” said Julie.
“We love the restoration work Jomast
have carried out and the moment we saw
the building we knew it was the perfect
location for us to be able to build on our
business success and achieve our dream
of opening our own Pie Jackers bakery and
diner.
“Throughout the whole process,
Jomast has been on hand to offer their
expertise and guidance, and we can’t wait
to welcome people when we open in the
summer.”
Another company relocating to
accommodate its rapid growth is digital
firm Carbon, which has taken 5,000 sq ft on
the 5th floor of Albert North’s SIXTEEN26
building.

The building, which is firmly establishing
itself as a digital and tech hub, has already
welcomed other rapidly expanding firms
such as Mabo Media and Salesfire.
Data management firm Carbon already
has a base in the town but having rapidly
expanded, the team has outgrown its
current premises.
Carbon is an AI-driven intent data
management platform and is the result
of years of digital marketing experience
combined with data science and
development expertise. Launched last
February, Carbon technology has already
been embedded by several publishers in
the US and Europe, as well as several large
UK-based agencies, with many more in the
pipeline.
Pete Danks, Carbon divisional CEO, said:
“We can’t wait to move into our new office.
The restoration work Jomast have done is
impressive, while the support and guidance
they’ve provided shows their commitment
to the growing community culture and vibe
of the area.
“The whole Albert North initiative is great
for the area and the vast number of budding
businesses of all sizes, particularly in digital
technology.
“For Carbon, in particular, it's fantastic
to be in and around some like-minded
tech companies such as Mabo Media and
Salesfire, and being around some great
local eateries like Pie Jackers will keep the
workforce very happy too.”
Pie Jacker’s and Carbon join Mabo
Media, Salesfire, Alkaline Kitchen and Hays
Recruitment who have already chosen this
central location.
Mark Hill, commercial property director at
Jomast, said: “We’ve already surpassed our
first year’s target for letting space in Albert
North within nine months of its inception
and now welcome both Pie Jackers and
Carbon to the community.
“It’s clear that businesses want to be
located in the heart of Middlesbrough and
the fact that we can accommodate their
future growth needs means we have a lot
to offer.”
Tenants based here receive many perks
including high-speed broadband, rent and
rate incentives, free public health initiatives
for staff, and a city centre loyalty card
offering discounts and incentives in local
shops.
Public realm work to replace the
street lighting along Albert Road is now
complete, and work has already started
on the installation of 22 new trees, which
when planted will further enhance the
regeneration of the area.
