milestone
T
eesside High School has this year
celebrated a major milestone in its
history.
Through a series of events, former
students and staff as well as current pupils
and their families have come together to
mark 120 years since the foundation of the
school’s Former Students’ Association.
A formal luncheon was enjoyed by FSA
members before the school community
took to its beautiful riverside grounds in
May for a festival-inspired summer fair to
remember.
Teesside High School traces its roots
back to Queen Victoria High School and
The Cleveland School, two Stockton-based
predecessor schools which merged in 1970.
The school’s rambling grounds reflect
the site’s history, the clockwork tower of
the impressive Woodside Hall remains in
situ, enjoyed by a new generation of school
children.
Under the leadership of Kirsty Mackenzie,
the school is enjoying a period of sustained
growth, welcoming a significant influx of
new students during the 2018/19 academic
year and implementing waiting lists for a
number of year groups.
“What visitors and prospective parents
will comment on most notably when
visiting Teesside High is its sense of
community; we are a small school where
everyone knows each other,” says Kirsty.
“Our family-style environment and
nurturing ethos are woven into the fabric of
the school.”
Teesside High School is described by the
Good Schools Guide as “an unpretentious,
hard-working school” which “exudes a
very special charm with a refreshing lack of
arrogance.”
The school was named among the
best performing independent schools in
the North East by the Sunday Times in
2018, rivalling some of the most selective
independent schools in the region.
“Different statistics can be used to make
different schools hit the headlines, but what
is important to me is that no child is left
behind,” adds Kirsty.
“Our non-selective nature shows that we
take every child on a journey, enabling them
to exceed what they thought was possible
and believe their dreams and aspirations are
achievable, regardless of their starting point.
“Small class sizes, inspirational teaching
and outstanding pastoral support are
integral to our success.”
