Calm
f there’s a software problem in need of a
solution, you can bet your bottom dollar
that the clever folks at Calm Digital can
find it.
It’s what the Middlesbrough-based
leading software and web company
thrives on - and its brand of specialist
expertise, coupled with energy, drive and
determination, has earned Calm a rapidly
expanding client list that takes in some of
the world’s biggest names.
If we threw monikers like the World
Health Organization, Commonwealth
War Graves Commission, Toyota, Lindt
chocolate, Butlins and global network
communications brand SES Networks into
the mix, you’ll get the idea.
But it’s not just nationally and
internationally that the Middlesbrough firm
is making its mark.
Calm has cemented itself firmly on the
North-East map in the past decade with
clients closer to home. Redcar Racecourse,
Tees Mutual, Wilton Centre and developing
an e-learning platform for Sage Gateshead
are just a few of the recent ‘wins’.
Put simply, the firm, based in Boho One
in Middlesbrough’s thriving digital quarter,
custom design and build medium to
complex web and software solutions to help
firms tackle whatever issues they may face.
It might be developing software to
help with production planning; apps or
web-based marketing tools to drive sales,
revenue and customer engagement;
implementing e-learning programmes and
tools or developing future-proof and flexible
Teesside-based digital software agency Calm Digital is
turning 10 and is celebrating a decade in business with
a healthy client base, new contracts and an expanding
office – but what’s to come? Joanne Barrett finds out.
helpdesk and conferencing software.
Whatever the brief, client aims and needs
come first. And with a talented team of 12
technical, design and developer experts,
the company can support everyone from
medium and large multi-national corporates
to start-ups in need of help and advice.
Launched in 2009, Calm has five
directors: Philip Allick, Helen Stewart,
Danielle Bloom, Andy Murphy and Daniel
Askwith.
2018 saw a 25% growth in terms
of turnover and, as a result, Calm has
increased the size of its business
development team, website division and
software expertise.
It has been a fast ten years for director
Danielle, who is very much looking forward
to what the next decade will bring.
To mark the anniversary, she says,
Calm has relaunched its own website and
expanded its office within Boho One.
“Our focus recently has been on larger
software projects for clients and that has
been really exciting,” says Danielle.
“The majority of our work lies in bespoke
development for clients. That sounds
expensive but it isn’t, necessarily. As their
digital partner, it is about building and
executing exactly what our clients require
to help them both run and grow their
businesses and products.
“We have yet to meet a client that we
haven’t found a solution for.”
Providing that special tailor-made service
is what makes Calm unique, she says, and
is what drives the company forward.
“Our services have naturally developed.
While we still provide all the traditional web
services, we now have a team of specialists
that are streets ahead in software creation
and delivery knowledge.”
Recently, new websites have been
built for the likes of The Poultry Club of
Great Britain, a new intranet for Tees law
firm Endeavour Partnership and a new
production planning system for Stockton-
based commercial body manufacturer, CPD
Bodies.
Calm has also developed a clever
Advent Calendar Online tool to help clients
including Lindt, Holiday Pirates, DFDS
Seaways and Wasps Rugby Club drive user
traffic.
Looking ahead, Calm’s future is certainly
bright.
“2018 was an amazing year for Calm
and we’re delighted to have a portfolio of
impressive work delivered and underway,”
says Helen Stewart, director in charge of
business development.
“Our websites are proving to be more
than worth the investment and our software
team is developing outstanding solutions
every time.
“Our future looks healthy, our team
expands on a monthly basis and, most
importantly, we are taking great strides to
be an international service provider.”
So raise a glass to many happy returns.
