HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS ISSUE
OF TEES BUSINESS:
WELCOME
GUEST FOREWORD from Ged Flanagan
A
Welcome to this special Winter 2018-19 issue of Tees Business
– the Tees region’s quarterly business publication.
s an experienced commercial lawyer
with Endeavour Partnership, I advise
both public and private sector
clients from a variety of sectors including
manufacturing and engineering, chemical,
energy, transport, regeneration, waste,
education, sports, and entertainment.
I’m Teesside born and bred and am proud
to call this area my home. So I’m hugely
encouraged by the positive news which is
reverberating around Teesside at the moment.
The Tees Valley plays a significant role in the
development of the Northern Powerhouse
economy and is one of eight parts of the
country to have a Metro mayor.
With devolved powers on issues such as
culture, tourism, transport and education, the
Tees Valley is promoting the area to investors
and communicating the area’s challenges and
opportunities to government.
The Tees Valley Combined Authority, through
its Strategic Economic Plan, aims to create
25,000 new jobs and deliver an additional £2.8
billion into the Tees economy by 2026.
The combined authority, together with the
five local authorities, is putting together a bid
to be named the 2025 City of Culture, which
would mean a significant investment into the
local economy.
There are big ambitions for the area and a
drive to realise the enormous potential for the
region.
There are massive opportunities for the area,
both for the people and businesses of the Tees
Valley.
A new SME advisory group was established
in 2017 with a view to providing small
businesses with a forum to be heard, with aims
to ensure that all businesses get the support
that they need to grow and succeed.
Big businesses also continue to invest
finances and resources in the area which is
encouraging and demonstrates that the Tees
Valley is a great place to invest.
The government has green energy high on its
agenda and the Tees Valley is establishing itself
at the forefront of that sector in areas such as
chemicals, wind and process innovation and
carbon capture, utilisation and storage. There
are also plans to secure funds to build Tees
Valley’s first hydrogen re-fuelling point for cars,
vans and buses.
The negative stereotypes associated with
the area are disappearing with perceptions
changing and positive news of national and
international investment now attracting the
national media.
This positive vibe is reflected in every issue
of Tees Business, with this issue being no
exception.
And, of course, the Tees region now has its
own business awards event for women. The
inaugural Tees Businesswomen Awards was
held in November – and you can read all about
it in a special 22-page feature in the centre of
this issue. Well done to all the winners and
shortlisted candidates!
