RAISING THE BAR
A Tees Business special feature on just a few of the new bars that have
popped up around Teesside in recent years. Whether you’re on a night out or
entertaining business clients, drink it all in…
The Nuthatch
Bedford Street, Middlesbrough
Wasp’s Nest Yard, Stockton
The Monk
Church Street, Guisborough
With leather sofas, large tables, a real log fire and a spacious courtyard
area, The Monk offers a perfect place to relax and unwind, day or night.
Drinkers can order from an extensive cocktail menu or savour one of
the bar’s carefully selected craft beers. Premium lagers from around
the world are also available, along with premium gins, vodkas,
whiskies and more.
Formerly the Priory Saddle Shop, the bar even boasts a staircase
down to tunnels rumoured to have once led to Guisborough Priory.
Maverick’s Sports Bar
Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough
Dubbed the new home of live sport
in Middlesbrough when it opened at
the end of last year, the American-
style sports bar on Linthorpe
Road was inspired by owner Mike
Hawkins’ trip to New York.
The bar features 10 TV screens
and Sky boxes, showing football and
a range of other sports including
NFL on Sunday nights, while guests
can also enjoy a game of darts or
pool while they enjoy a beer or
cocktail.
Sherlock’s
Baker Street, Middlesbrough
Featuring a range of real ales, ciders, wines and
spirits, Sherlock’s is one of several quirky pubs
and micro bars to have opened in the Baker
Street/Bedford Street regeneneration zone over
the past couple of years.
Co-owner Shaun also owns Middlesbrough
pubs, The Star, O’Connell’s and The Dubliners.
Whether you’re in Stockton or Middlesbrough, you can’t
go far wrong with two Nuthatch bars on Teesside.
The Nuthatch on Bedford Street, Middlesbrough, is
popular with those seeking a few after-dinner drinks or
cocktails, having enjoyed the food at one of the array of
nearby restaurants including The Curing House, The Fork
in the Road, Bistrot Pierre, Barbarossa, Turtle Bay, The
Smeltery and Acropolis.
The past few years have seen a steady stream of bars
crop up in the immediate area too, including Sherlock’s,
The Slater’s Pick, Twisted Lip, The Bottled Note, Devil’s
Advocate, The Dovecot and The Chairman.
Nuthatch owner Simon Hatfield says: “We see a
whole array of customers. We’ve often welcomed
parties of overseas investors impressed by our range of
whiskies and lawyers entertaining clients or attending
our cocktail-making classes or spirit and wine tasting
sessions.
“I don’t think people like doing business in a
boardroom any longer - it’s far better done over an Old
Fashioned or a Dry Martini.”
Thirsty Souls
Prince Regent Street,
Stockton
Do you ever get tired of
fighting your way to the bar? Then why
not serve yourself, with Thirsty Souls’
fantastic ten-tap beer wall. Top up your
payment card and spend the night

along with a range of award-winning pies.
Fourteen Drops
High Street, Yarm
Fourteen Drops is a wine bar and
wine shop specialising in more than
200 wines from across the globe,
while it’s also a specialist cheese
monger and offers a large range of
charcuterie that can be eaten in or
taken away.
During the day, it operates as a
coffee shop, serving a selection of
sandwiches, small plates and sharing
boards. Alongside an extensive wine
list, visitors can also choose from a
selection of gins from the bar and in
the shop.
