FOREWORD from Amanda Gardiner
It gives me great pleasure to provide the guest foreword for the
Winter 2018 issue of Teesside’s only business magazine.
As a company boss, I love reading all
the great news from around our business
community every quarter, and it fills us with
confidence to learn about our many success
stories.
Tees Business is always brimming with
positive news, and this issue is no different.
But there is an issue, which originally
cropped up in the last edition, which I know
has got people talking – and that’s about
women in business!
During the Tees Business annual poll of
Teesside’s most inspiring businesspeople, only
three females made the top 30.
It’s an interesting debate as to why, and I’m
really pleased to see this being raised as an
issue.
My take on it is that women tend to
be extremely busy balancing family and
professional life. There are many very talented
woman out there running businesses and
achieving great things, we’re just not hearing
enough about them.
Women probably don’t get out there as
much as we should, in terms of PR. Running
my own business as a woman isn’t always
comfortable, but that’s a good thing – it means
we will always work harder to succeed.
In the words of Sheryl Sandberg “we are
lucky, we don’t live in the world that our
mothers lived in, our grandmothers lived in,
where career choices for women were so
limited”. We can carve out our own career and
we can run our own business. It just takes
determination and we need to be prepared to
shout louder than the men. Get out there and
get shouting!
I would definitely like to see the promotion
of more women in senior positions providing a
balanced level within organisations, and I think
most men will probably agree that it’s healthy
to have women in senior positions within
companies.
I was naturally delighted to learn that Tees
Business are planning the region’s very first
Tees Businesswomen Awards next year.
Planned for Autumn 2018, it will help to
highlight our outstanding ladies, and will
hopefully unearth some hidden gems. It will
definitely be one of the first dates in my diary!
You can learn more about that on page 19,
and you can read Dave Allan’s feature on some
of our inspiring businesswomen on pages
16-17.
I’d like to take this opportunity to wish
all Tees Business readers and our fellow
companies across Teesside a very successful
and prosperous 2018.
