New lease of life for Teesside ’ s most decorated restaurant

Teesside ’ s most decorated restaurant has literally been given a new lease of life after becoming an independent freehouse . The owners of Chadwicks Inn Maltby , Helen and Gary Gill , Lee Tolley and head chef , Steven Lawford , have acquired the lease of their multi award-winning gastro pub from Ei Group , formerly known as Enterprise Inns , eight years after initially launching the business .
And after giving Chadwicks a fresh look with new decor and soft furnishings – added with investment in new equipment and machinery , including an impressive piece of kit that maintains the freshness and quality of wines and fizz for longer – its joint-owners are now looking forward to offering more choice to customers .
Helen said : “ We ’ re delighted that we ’ re now an independent freehouse as it will give us more freedom to offer our customers more choice .
“ We were previously restricted to certain types of lagers , beers and spirits but now we can have more choice and be a bit more creative .”

Gourmand ”, symbolising restaurants listed in the Michelin Guide offering “ exceptional good food at moderate prices ”, while other prestigious awards include two AA Rosettes and a listing in the Michelin Guide for the past seven years .
But as Helen explains , they ’ re not resting on their laurels .
Investment has been made in an upgraded coffee machine and coffee grinder , with staff being fully trained by coffee experts from North Yorkshire-based suppliers Rountons and also a “ Verre de Vin ” ( which is French for glass of wine ) – an impressive piece of equipment that improves the shelf-life of wines and minimises wastage .
“ We ’ re always looking for ways to improve everything ,” adds Helen . “ We take our wine very seriously , and the Verre de Vin will mean more of our nicer wines will be available by the glass or carafe , which means customers don ’ t have to buy the whole bottle , and we ’ ll be able to offer a greater variety .
“ We ’ ve also given the restaurant a freshen up , with new paintwork , soft furnishings and accessories , so it all ties in nicely with us acquiring the lease – it ’ s an exciting time for us .”
Another change is the appointment of Luke Conroy as restaurant manager – although regulars will recognise he ’ s not new to Chadwicks .
The 28-year-old , from Yarm , has worked here part-time for four years but took up a full-time role in July before he was offered the manager ’ s position just a few weeks later .
“ Job satisfaction is what I love most about working here ,” says Luke . “ The team will put all the time and effort in behind the scenes to make sure our customers get as much satisfaction out of their stay as possible , and when they give you good feedback it ’ s a great feeling – it ’ s nice to see people walking out with a smile on their faces .
“ We feel we offer excellent value here at Chadwicks – our lunch and early evening menu is competitively priced and our dinner menu is superb , which is reflected in the fact that we have enjoyed many prestigious accolades over the years .”
Chadwicks Inn ’ s popularity among Teesside diners is strengthened by the fact Christmas Day lunches have been sold out since the start of the year – and could have sold out many times over – while weekly and Sunday lunches continue to prove popular , as do their wine tasting nights .
