Sophie-Jo’ s journey within law began with years of study, including an LLB and LLM in Law from Northumbria University and building her early career at Hewitts in Stockton, joining the family law department in 2021 as a legal secretary.
Within a year Sophie-Jo had secured a training contract, qualifying as a solicitor in October 2024 and going on to practise across both public and private family law.
“ I wanted to help people and families and that’ s what I always cared about,” she said.“ Law played to my strengths. I enjoyed the research, the drafting and the writing. If I could use those skills to make a difference, that’ s where I wanted to be.”
Her drive to work in law was rooted in a desire to help people, but as a selfdescribed perfectionist, Sophie-Jo became increasingly aware of the pressures placed on solicitors and the staffing challenges affecting many firms.
She wanted to keep contributing to the legal sector but in a way that allowed her to support people while protecting her own work-life balance.
When Sophie-Jo decided to leave practice as a family solicitor, she didn’ t leave her training and experience in law behind. Her ongoing drive to help people led her into legal recruitment.
Her first role placed her in the highpressure US recruitment market, where she gained sharp insight into different working styles, personalities and the demands of operating across global jurisdictions. It was a fast and formative introduction to the industry, one that built the foundation for her next chapter.
Joining Middlesbrough-based Achieve Professionals as senior recruitment consultant leading the legal division was, in her words, a tailor-fit opportunity.
Sophie-Jo said:“ I joined Achieve because it was the chance to work in the market I had spent years studying and practising in. I get to apply everything I learned as a solicitor alongside the skills I built in recruitment.
“ Since joining, I’ ve reconnected with friends across Teesside and colleagues from regional firms I used to work with. It feels like coming home.”
Her impact has been immediate. Sophie- Jo has already placed conveyancers across Stockton, Redcar, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool; secured an in-house legal counsel for a family office operating between London and Japan; and appointed a family partner in Teesside, a corporate litigation solicitor in Newcastle and an employment solicitor in York, alongside support staff placements for firms across the region. What sets her apart is her first- hand understanding of the legal world.
She said:“ Having practised as a solicitor, I know the qualities firms actually need. I know what a strong secretary or support staff member looks like in practice, not just on paper. That insight, paired with my connections across the region, is what I bring to every brief.”
Sophie-Jo supports law firms across Teesside, throughout the UK and the US, and works closely with in-house legal teams looking for the right legal counsel, from family and conveyancing through to corporate, litigation, employment and partner-level appointments.
Sophie-Jo helps people find roles that both play to their strengths and focus on the right cultural fit within a company.
For Achieve Professionals, the appointment marks another step in the firm’ s growth. Backed by recent six-figure investment from NEL Fund Managers, the business continues to expand its specialist divisions, drawing in experienced consultants who bring sector expertise as well as recruitment skill.
