Chadwicks keep historic partnership cooking

Chadwicks Inn has renewed a historic connection with Maltby Cricket Club by sponsoring the village side during its landmark 80th anniversary year.

The renowned Maltby restaurant and pub – owned by former Middlesbrough FC footballer Gary Gill and wife Helen – is backing the club as it celebrates eight decades since its post-war reformation in 1946.
The sponsorship also revives ties stretching back generations between the village pub and the cricket club. Before the venue became Chadwicks Inn, it was known as The Pathfinders Inn, named in tribute to RAF Thornaby’ s famous Pathfinder squadron during the Second World War.
RAF Thornaby’ s airfield was once situated close to Maltby Cricket Club’ s former ground at Tarren’ s Farm, with the squadron initially carrying out coastal defence duties before later flying de Havilland Mosquitos as part of the elite Pathfinder force, marking targets ahead of

bombing missions over Europe.
The pub itself also has long-standing cricketing links. Former landlord Norman Wildon captained Maltby Cricket Club and, before the club had its own facilities, the venue acted as the team’ s unofficial pavilion for post-match refreshments.
Today, Chadwicks Inn remains one of the region’ s best-known hospitality venues, having retained two AA Rosettes for 16 years while also being listed in the Michelin Guide for the past 14 years.
Helen Gill said:“ We are absolutely delighted to support our local cricket team during such a special anniversary year.
“ Maltby Cricket Club is a huge part of the village community and there is so much shared history between the club and Chadwicks Inn. It feels very fitting to strengthen those ties during the club’ s 80th anniversary celebrations and we wish everyone involved a fantastic season.”
Maltby Cricket Club now fields three senior teams alongside a thriving junior section and recently celebrated double promotion for its first and second teams.
