Steel work – SCH Site Services has worked on £ 20m-worth of Teesside projects over the last five years.
The firm’ s multi-skilled team are experienced in erecting steelwork and timber structures. Their knowledge of all sites and sectors ensures they are prepared for every task.
Inspections of plant and equipment are carried out each day and logged onto the ISO9001-accredited system, ensuring clients have all health and safety documentation at hand.
Founded in the early 1990s, the company started as Spennymoor Crane Hire with just four cranes and four drivers.
In 2011 it underwent a huge restructure and began widening its services to become the company it is today.
Managing director Gary Finley says it’ s this change that’ s driven huge expansion and a growing order book.
“ We quickly realised that by offering a fully controlled service completely overseen by our team of experts, we had full control all the way from inception to completion,” he added.
“ It’ s a service not many fabricators offer but we think having that full control means there is transparency for the client and peace of mind throughout the entire project.”
One such project was the recent completion of the structural steelwork package for the new Urgent Treatment Centre, beside the Accident and Emergency department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
In partnership with Robertson Construction North East, SCH provided a comprehensive start-to-finish solution, ensuring the new facility was built to support better patient care and streamline the hospital’ s operations.

pressure on the main A & E department.
SCH’ s role required careful planning and coordination to ensure there was limited impact on the hospital and its patients while the work was carried out.
It involved supplying and installing the primary structural steel frame for the new facility, navigating tight site boundaries within the live hospital environment.
These included proximity to the active helipad, which required careful planning and coordination and collaborating closely with project partners to ensure safe, phased installation with minimal disruption to hospital operations.
This project demanded a high level of precision, co-ordination and awareness of critical site constraints, all of which were successfully managed by the firm’ s experienced team.
Gary said:“ Clearly, hospitals are very busy places 24 hours a day, so for us it was critical to minimise disruption for patients and staff but more importantly, to ensure their safety.
“ Having our expert teams always on hand meant we could plan and execute the construction, dealing with any potential issues instantly with the client’ s full knowledge and involvement.
“ Projects like this one show that even modest-sized jobs can carry real regional importance.
“ SCH Site Services was pleased to contribute our expertise to help enable better healthcare delivery for the people of Newcastle and beyond.”
SCH has gone from strength to strength since adopting the all-underone-roof business model.
Having its own fabrication, surface treatment lines and site teams has helped extend its reputation as a company that provides accountability and reassurance on all its projects and for its clients.
The firm now manufactures and installs more than 5,000 tonnes of structural steelwork per year.
Contracts secured include refurbishments of large shopping complexes and projects in the commercial, education, retail, energy, health, residential, industry and Infrastructure, leisure and defence sectors.
And despite having to navigate some tough challenges, particularly the Covid pandemic, the firm has maintained its revenues for the past five years and, crucially, maintained its repeat clients.
It’ s because of this stability that the company is always considering expanding its workforce, but Gary said the timing must be right.
“ We are determined to make sure we keep the business strong and if the opportunity comes along to expand our workforce, this will be done organically through a strong order book and demand,” he said.
“ We will continue to look for and recruit the most experienced people in our industry as it’ s our expertise and knowledge that I believe makes us stand out from the rest. This is what our clients expect from us – a well organised and professional company that delivers a highly skilled service from start to finish of a project.”
