( 1st last year)

Topping the poll for a second successive year – and the third time overall – Bill Scott was born in a terraced house in central Middlesbrough, began his career as an apprentice plater and has – by his own admission – seen the company he co-founded enjoy a rollercoaster existence of highs and lows.

But Wilton Group, on the north bank of the River Tees alongside the Transporter Bridge, is now massively on the up, delivering hugely significant contracts for the Ministry of Defence.
Bill is also a trustee and long-term supporter of The Teesside Charity, represents King Charles in the region as a deputy lieutenant and mentors a number of local business owners too.
Revealing the traits he thinks a good boss should have, he told Tees Business:“ An inspiring leader must have honesty and an open relationship with their peers and staff.
“ But it’ s not all about work – it’ s about what you do outside of work, too. So, community is really important. A lot of people work hard and run a good company, but they could also use that talent to do something meaningful.

But he revealed his relationship with his colleagues allows him the time to do those“ extras”.
He explained:“ At work, I have a brilliant team that is empowered to do what they have to do. I’ m not wanting to get involved and disrupt what they’ re doing – I let them get on with it.
“ But I’ m a‘ doer’ – I can’ t sit still. I must be doing something.”
