Swinburne Maddison expands North-East reach with senior appointment and new Teesside hub
Regional ambition, strategic growth
Award-winning law firm Swinburne Maddison is continuing its upward trajectory with a series of strategic moves that reinforce its position as one of the North-East’ s most leading legal practices.
Following a significant rebrand and a third win as Law Firm of the Year at the 2025 Northern Law Awards, the Durhamheadquartered firm is expanding its footprint across the region, recently with a new presence in Teesside and the senior appointment of a commercial litigation partner.
With more than 90 professionals and a full-service offering spanning corporate, commercial, dispute resolution, employment, real estate and private client services, Swinburne Maddison has long been recognised for its depth of expertise.
The firm is ranked Top Tier in the Legal 500 across four key practice areas, while its recent brand refresh, anchored in the message,“ A contemporary law firm rooted in tradition”, signals a confident, modern approach to legal services.
“ We’ ve always been proud of our Durham heritage,” said managing partner Jonathan Moreland.“ But our vision has never been limited by geography. Our expansion into Teesside is a natural evolution of our strategy, to be where our clients need us, with the right people in place to support them.”
Helen Lyne joins as partner At the heart of this latest phase of growth is the appointment of Helen Lyne as partner in the firm’ s commercial litigation team. A well-known figure in the Teesside legal community, Helen has spent her entire legal career in the region and brings more than 13 years of experience in resolving complex disputes and helping businesses avoid them altogether.
“ This move is about bringing effective business protection to Teesside,” she said.“ I’ ve joined Swinburne Maddison to build on their agile and client-focused service, one that prioritises early intervention and tailored legal strategies.”
Helen’ s expertise spans early risk assessments, contract reviews, dispute resolution and representation in highstakes litigation. She is particularly passionate about supporting SMEs, which she describes as“ the lifeblood of the economy.”
