T
eesside is poised to become a leader in sustainable aviation fuel( SAF) production with the announced Lighthouse Green Fuels( LGF) project in Stockton-on-Tees.
Developed by Alfanar, a global renewables, engineering and construction group headquartered in Saudi Arabia, LGF aims to accelerate the decarbonisation of the aviation sector.
WHAT IS SAF? HOW IS IT MADE? SAF is a key component in the global pursuit of a greener aviation sector. It is a“ drop-in” fuel that can be used in today’ s aircraft engines with only minor modifications. SAF is the only viable solution for decarbonising flights up to 2050.
Aviation’ s year-on-year emissions have been growing significantly faster than those of other transport sectors, UK aviation specifically contributes eight per cent of collective UK emissions. The sector needs to decarbonise to ensure we retain the economic and social benefits of flying.
SAF can reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent compared to traditional jet fuel. This significant reduction is achieved through the use of biogenic feedstocks and advanced technologies to produce the fuel. SAF can be produced from a variety of renewable sources, including biomass, household or municipal solid waste, used cooking oil, algae or animal fats and it is already being produced commercially and used to fuel flights globally. Key technology breakdown: LGF will take and process waste materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or be incinerated. These processes contribute to generating greenhouse gas emissions and result in air pollution.
First, LGF will process the waste biomass materials to produce homogeneous feedstock for the LGF SAF process.
Next, these feedstocks are subjected to very high temperatures in a low-oxygen environment in a process called gasification. This process breaks down the feedstock into a mixture of gases, mainly carbon monoxide( CO), hydrogen( H₂) and carbon dioxide( CO2). This mixture is called synthetic gas, or‘ syngas’.
Crude syngas leaving the gasification process is cleaned before being sent to the Fischer-Tropsch( FT) unit. The FT process is a catalytic process which converts the syngas into liquid hydrocarbons, which serve as the foundational components for fuels such as diesel and jet fuel. The FT reaction involves linking small gas molecules together to form larger, liquid molecules suitable for use as fuel. The refined synthetic fuel is then blended with conventional jet fuel and used in aircrafts.

KEY FACTS – THE PATH TO NET ZERO Due to its size, the facility will establish a national and international supply chain by procuring feedstock, such as non-recyclable waste, waste wood and forest residues from various regions across the UK and beyond.

Is your business flying the flag for the Tees region?
If so, seize your chance to be part of This Is Tees Valley 2025-26 – the flagship publication leading the charge for our region to the rest of the UK.
Produced by the expert team behind Tees Business, This Is Tees Valley is a high-quality annual publication showcasing everything that makes our region a brilliant place to live, work, invest and visit.
With Tees Valley named the UK’ s number one tech hub, SeAH Wind’ s worldclass monopile factory now operational at Teesworks and game-changing sustainability projects gathering pace, the 2025-26 edition is set to be the most positive and powerful yet.
Tees Business director Dave Allan said:“ Our region has so much to offer – and it’ s in all our interests to spread that message
annum of waste or biomass feedstock will be processed per year, generating more than 134,000 tonnes per year of second generation SAF and more than 20,000 tonnes per year of green naphtha.
SAF produced by the plant will account for over 10 per cent of the UK government’ s 2030 SAF target of 1.2 million tonnes- sufficient to fuel 25,000 short-haul or 2,500 long-haul flights. Compared with conventional aviation fuel( kerosene) derived from fossil fuels, LGF’ s SAF will save more than 350,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
LGF not only marks a milestone in SAF production on a commercial scale nationally, it offers significant socio-economic benefits to the Teesside region by acting as a catalyst for economic growth.
With a substantial £ 1.5bn investment, the construction phase alone is expected to generate more than £ 470m Gross Value Added( GVA) for the UK, providing a boost to the national economy.
WHY TEESSIDE? Strong Industrial Heritage Teesside has long been a cornerstone of industrial innovation in the UK, and the new SAF plant continues this tradition. During WWII the Teesside site, originally the Billingham Manufacturing Plant operated by ICI, was crucial for producing synthetic fuel

Let’ s tell the world why This Is Tees Valley! from coal, vital due to petroleum scarcity. This ensured a reliable supply of materials for military and domestic use.
Leveraging its legacy, the new SAF plant at Teesside will use cutting-edge technology to convert waste and biomass into SAF, significantly reducing carbon emissions. This facility symbolises the region’ s ongoing dedication to innovation and excellence in meeting future energy challenges.
Skilled Workforce The region has a skilled workforce with expertise in engineering, manufacturing and chemical processing, which is vital for the successful operation and maintenance of the SAF plant. LGF already employs a team of more than 40 people on-site and it will create up to 2,600 jobs across the region during the construction phase, with a further 840 fulltime jobs created once operational by 2029.
Carbon Capture & Storage Another key factor in selecting the project ' s location is its position within the Carbon Capture Cluster( known as Net Zero Teesside( NZT), which is part of the Northern Endurance Partnership( NEP)). Carbon capture plays a pivotal role in SAF production in the UK.

Energy Security and Government Support Noaman Al Adhami, UK country head for Alfanar Projects, says: " Recent global events underscore the critical importance of energy security. The LGF project will significantly enhance the UK’ s energy independence by establishing a domestic source of alternative jet fuel.
“ This venture is crucial for reducing dependence on imports and, consequently, maintaining competitive ticket prices compared with imported SAF and associated fees, benefiting both the UK PLC and consumers.
“ Recognised by the UK government’ s Department for Transport as one of the five key SAF plants pivotal for achieving its Jet Zero Strategy goals, LGF has received respective funding support and is committed to delivering on this mission, ensuring a sustainable future for aviation and strengthening the UK ' s energy security.” far and wide.
