WINNER
ARTAV
Middlesbrough The boss of a Teesside audio-visual firm admits it was daunting but exciting to work at such events as the Commonwealth Games and Eurovision 2023 .
Middlesbrough-based ArtAV is something of a hidden gem on Teesside , having quietly built a world-class reputation for providing industry-leading audio-visual services to art galleries , museums , big events and , from this year , even a major new West End stage show .
It ’ s also now the proud holder of the SME and Overall VelociTees awards for Turnover , having leapt from £ 1,380,000 to £ 3,370,000 ( 144 % growth ).
But founder and director Nick Joyce , who started the company back in 1997 from a house in Acklam , admits it ’ s amazing to think that a small company based on Riverside Park – it has only nine employees – is rubbing shoulders with huge names in the industry at events such as Eurovision and the Commonwealth Games .
He said : “ We had to essentially help design and qualify all the technology involved in those shows , making sure it was correct and was going to be delivered correctly . We worked with much bigger companies – the likes of Creative Technology – who would come in with crews of hundreds . I think they were quite surprised that a company from Teesside was playing in such a big ballpit . But that ’ s what we ’ re really proud of – the establishments we work with and the jobs we work on are world-class .
“ It makes me very proud , having had the business for so long on Teesside . We only employ Teesside people – every member of staff is from Teesside and it just showcases the talent we ’ ve got in the region that we can play in that kind of world .”
ArtAV employees , says Nick , have one main thing in common – passion for what they do . He said : “ We don ’ t mind if people need training and their skills honed – we can do that . That ’ s the easy bit – we want people to have loads of enthusiasm and want to be at the very top of the game . And when we find it , we nurture it .”
Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool was , he says , “ right up there ” for his favourite assignment “ for the sheer fun of it ”. He said : “ You know when you get that feeling ‘ I can ’ t wait to go to work ’? That was Eurovision .”
