Energy users turning to efficiency drives Major energy users – including intensive industrial and technology users as well as retailers , transport businesses and the property sector – also fed into this year ’ s report , with these businesses reporting a focus on energy efficiency initiatives in decarbonisation strategies .
The high costs associated with such measures have previously led to a lack of enthusiasm , but now 54 % of respondents are prioritising energy-saving strategies , with most commercial energy users ( 68 %) currently relying on operating income to fund decarbonisation efforts .
Sarah Daun , partner at WBD , said : “ According to our findings , 58 % of businesses put this change in emphasis down to a strong focus on environmental protection , with 36 % also highlighting the moral imperative of ‘ doing the right thing ’, while a similar proportion note the operational efficiencies decarbonisation brings .
“ All in all , this is an approach which allows firms to tick both ethical and financial boxes , but there still comes a question of how best to approach the at times significant task of decarbonising .
