The Steel River Quay ’ s strategic location and direct access to the North Sea offers unparalleled connectivity
substantial power supplies on site .
This received a major boost in October with the establishment of a new joint venture company to develop a private wire network to provide power at scale to occupiers on Teesworks .
Steel River Power is a 50:50 joint venture between Steel River Energy and North West Electricity Networks ( UK ) to design , build , own and operate the private electricity distribution network on the Teesworks site .
The site has an existing private electricity distribution network connected directly to the National Grid transmission system .
Steel River Power will invest upwards of £ 100m , directly employ 20 people and indirectly employ hundreds more to upgrade and expand this existing private electricity distribution network to accommodate the current and future needs of tenants on the Teesworks site .
When complete , the Steel River Power network will be the largest private electricity network in the UK .
Chris Musgrave OBE , chairman of Teesworks , sister company of Steel River Energy , said : “ This is a massive step forward for Teesworks .
“ Upgrading and expanding the private wire network will mean occupiers on the site have access to a safe and reliable electricity network with sufficient capacity to support their operations . It is the backbone utility for Teesworks .”
The people of Teesside were able to see for themselves the progress being made at Teesworks when a series of open public tours of the site were held in November .
Almost 200 people signed up to be taken on a guided tour of Teesworks , taking in the highlights of the 2,500-acre site .
Launching the tours , Chris explained : “ We hope that holding a series of free tours will enable people to get a much greater understanding of the scale of development on the site , what has already been done and the exciting developments still to come .”
Sharon Dunn , a retired school business manager from Redcar , was one of the first attendees on the Teesworks tours .
She said : “ Our daughter has just started an apprenticeship with SeAH Wind , so we know first-hand what Teesworks is bringing to the region when it comes to future skills and job creation .
“ My first impression of the site was that I couldn ’ t believe the vast scale of it and all the work that has been going on . The development is a game-changer for our local economy . It ’ s bringing much-needed jobs to the area and giving young people the chance to upskill .”
Further tours are now being planned for the New Year .
