SETTING THE FOUNDATIONS

FOR FUTURE GROWTH

Teesside is at the forefront of efforts to transform the UK economy and change the way we power our homes and industries using green energy sources . Here , chief executive officer Frans Caljé explains why , as a major landowner and stakeholder on the River Tees , PD Ports is in a prime position to support the region to reach its potential .

Teesside is standing at the precipice of monumental change , with a vast array of opportunities that can see it lead the UK into the upcoming energy transition and beyond .

We – here in Teesside – have the building blocks to be at the forefront of what I believe will be the fourth Industrial Revolution . The opportunities that lie within the energy transition – be that offshore wind , green and blue hydrogen , sustainable fuels – are all within our grasp .
The possibilities have been talked up for some time , but 2024 has been a year where those building blocks have started to move into place .
At PD Ports , we are committed to supporting the region ’ s push to become a national centre of excellence for the energy transition , by making landbank available for major projects , supporting the movement of key project cargo into Tees dock and by lobbying government for key investment .
We want to help unlock the capability of our region , our industry , of the UK , as a hub for trade and industry , and to achieve its undoubted potential as the foundation of the energy transition .
Collaboration and partnership working will be key if Teesside is to reach its full potential and achieve lasting change for its economy and the people who live and work here .
There are a number of exciting projects underway on our own estate – our good friends at EDF have plans to build a green hydrogen electroliser at Teesport , using renewable electricity to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen , creating a fuel source that has no carbon emissions .
We also partner with EDF at Port of Hartlepool , which they use as a base to service the Teesside Offshore Wind Farm .
Elsewhere on PD Ports ’ estate , we celebrated the successful commissioning of MGT , which is now up and running at Tees dock – the biggest biomass power plant in the world right in the heart of Teesside .
We also renewed and extended our lease with JDR Cables at Port of Hartlepool , providers of subsea cables in the offshore sector , and also welcomed the arrival of Wasco to Hartlepool , operating a pipe coating facility that will be instrumental in the carbon capture process .
