How SABIC ’ s ‘ community days ’ are allowing staff to give back
Hoedown – SABIC staff volunteered at Ladies of Steel ’ s cowboy-themed social for local pensioners .
Chemical giant SABIC ’ s Teesside operations include a world-scale LDPE ( lower density polyethylene plant ), ethane cracker , logistics , jetties and storage facilities across its sites at Wilton and North Tees .
As well as being a key employer , with more than 300 employees , many more contractors and a large supply chain , SABIC ’ s senior management team believes it has a responsibility to the local community .
Across Europe , SABIC businesses take part in “ community days ” that focus on involving employees in activities in the form of volunteering or taking part in organised events within the local community .
Some of 2024 ’ s activities for the company ’ s Teesside operation included :
Footprints in the Community A team of volunteers went along to the Footprints in the Community warehouse at Dormanstown . This involved helping with the charity ’ s First Steps project , which provides clothing for children and babies along with equipment for those in need .
The SABIC team helped to sort and categorise baby clothing donations , as well as cleaning and checking baby equipment . A donation was also made to further support the charity .
Speaking about the volunteering experience , volunteer Emma Gash said : “ Volunteering with SABIC is a great way to give something back and support local community projects . To me this opportunity really emphasised the importance of helping those in need .
“ I enjoyed meeting new people and learning more about the charity and the impact it has .”
Ladies of Steel – pensioners ’ afternoon tea Ladies of Steel is a voluntary group that supports the local community in the Dormanstown area , close to SABIC ’ s Wilton operations , including a regular afternoon social event for pensioners and a youth club at the Corus Sports & Social Club .
SABIC sponsored a special country edition of the event , with a cowboy-themed menu , country singer and games . Around 150
