Siblings join the team at award-winning Tees restaurant

Two siblings have joined the team at award-winning Tees restaurant Chadwicks Inn Maltby .
And despite obvious challenges in hospitality , the popular gastro pub is looking to the future with optimism .
Chadwicks – nestled in the beautiful , leafy village of Maltby , close to Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick – has for the 15th consecutive year been awarded 2 AA rosettes , together with a place in the Michelin Guide for the ninth year running , the only Tees restaurant to achieve this double milestone .
Bosses at Chadwicks put their success down to staying true to their original values , nurturing young local talent and retaining staff .
Chadwicks is owned by husband-andwife duo Helen and Gary Gill , along with front-of-house chief Lee Tolley and head chef Steven Lawford .
Fifteen years after launching it – and having endured the challenges of the Covid pandemic – Chadwicks is still going strong as one of the most popular restaurants in the Tees Valley .
Now the team has been boosted by the arrival of Alec and Nina Gill – Helen and Gary ’ s children – to maintain the pub ’ s distinct family feel .
Eighteen-year-old Alec , like his dad a keen footballer , has joined the kitchen staff as an apprentice commis chef and is learning “ from the best ” to become a chef . And sixteen-year-old Nina has joined the front-of-house team on a hospitality apprenticeship , both through Northern Skills , part of the Middlesbrough College Group .
“ We ’ re thrilled to see Alec and Nina join the team ,” said proud mum Helen .
“ We have a fantastic team here at Chadwicks and we have a proud record of training young people , whether that ’ s those looking for a career in hospitality or those looking for part-time work while at college .
“ Covid destroyed a lot of this industry . And a lot of it was to do with staff . But we were really lucky . We kept just about everybody . And we ’ ve got a really nice team .
“ We ’ ve actually had quite a lot of young people who ’ ve grown up in the village and worked for us .
“ A few of the mums now call us the Maltby Finishing School , because they join us as quiet and shy kids , and become confident young adults . It ’ s wonderful to see .”
Chadwicks currently has four full-time front-of-house staff with three casual staff . And in the kitchen there are four full-time chefs aided by kitchen part-timers .
The team is always evolving the look and vibe of the restaurant while regularly changing its menu and updating its specials .
Helen said : “ It ’ s very easy to rest on your laurels , especially when you see something day in , day out – you can become blind to it .
“ You have to try and take a step back and look at it and think , right , what can we do differently ?
“ So we ’ ve made a conscious effort to keep things fresh and constantly bring in new ideas .
“ The ethos of when we started this place has never changed . We wanted to create somewhere that we would want to go to .
“ We like our food , we like our wine , but we don ’ t want to be somewhere too formal . And that ’ s still the ethos behind it .
“ That ’ s still what we want it to be . As well as being a nice bar where the locals can come and sit and have a pint .
“ But , ultimately , everything we do is quality . Everything we make is on site , we even make our own bread . What you get with us is top quality food and service at reasonable prices with a warm , familyfriendly atmosphere .”
Chadwicks Inn Maltby offers a value set menu , ideal for business lunches – two courses for £ 24.50 or three courses for £ 29.50 – alongside an award-winning A La Carte menu .
In addition , they also offer a ‘ pub classics ’ menu every Wednesday and Thursday ( noon-2pm and 5pm-8.30pm ) and Friday and Saturday ( noon-2pm and 5pm-6pm ) as well as Sunday lunches and wine tasting evenings .
