The giant Teesworks development on the south bank of the River Tees is about a lot more than the 2,500 acres of land it consists of and the physical structures taking shape at the site .
One of the key drivers behind the project – as well as creating jobs , investment and a home for low- and zero-carbon industries – is to nurture and embed the skills needed for the industries of tomorrow .
This is why the establishment of the Teesworks Skills Academy was one of the first things done on the site once the initial clearance had been completed .
The academy plays a multi-faceted role : it links jobseekers , employment hubs and skills providers , all focused to create a world-class workforce for Teesworks .
Working in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions and local training providers and employment hubs , the academy offers : > recruitment services > access to training and specialist facilities > links to contractors and subcontractors > access to college and university courses aligned to industry
The academy enables employers and investors in the Tees Valley to build a skilled workforce from a local talent pool , either by upskilling current staff or by employing new staff who are equipped with the skills needed for the job roles as a result of training with the academy and its partners .
As well as helping companies to set up , operate and expand on the site , the academy plays a crucial role in developing young talent and providing futures for the people of the Tees Valley – one of the main aims for the Teesworks development as a whole .
While the Skills Academy only opened in November 2022 , it has already racked up some impressive figures including : > more than 2,000 young people have been through its doors on various programmes and initiatives
> more than 500 people have gone through reskilling and upskilling programmes which the academy has set up with local training providers , all of whom have gone on to gain employment at the Teesworks site in a variety of roles The private sector partners at Teesworks
