Mura Technology – ReNew ELP Mura Technology ’ s ReNew ELP site at Wilton International will be the first commercial-scale site to use its trademarked Hydro-PRT advanced plastic recycling process to convert “ unrecyclable ” plastics , including post-use , multi-layer flexible and rigid materials , into high-quality recycled liquid hydrocarbon feedstocks for use in the manufacture of new plastics and other products , replacing the use of fossil resource .
The site , which will commence operations in 2024 , will have the capacity to produce 20,000 tonnes of hydrocarbon products annually , with the opportunity to expand the site up to three times this initial size . The process provides an 80 per cent carbon emissions saving by diverting “ unrecyclable ” plastic away from incineration .
The products are produced at a lower
global warming potential than fossil oilbased products , and for every tonne of plastics recycled with Hydro-PRT , up to five barrels of oil are saved from extraction .
SABIC UK Petrochemicals One of the world ’ s leading petrochemical companies , SABIC has operated on Teesside since 2006 . The Wilton International site hosts two main manufacturing plants : Olefins 6 ( or the “ Cracker ”) and System 18 , the world ’ s largest low-density polyethylene plant .
SABIC provides solutions for end-use applications such as automotive , hygiene and healthcare , electrical and electronics , packaging , agriculture , consumer products , and building and construction . The firm employs 300 people directly across its sites at Wilton International and North Tees and supports many more jobs via suppliers and service providers .
Ensus The Ensus biorefinery at Wilton uses UK animal feed grade wheat to make three sustainable low-carbon products boosting the food and fuel sectors . Ethanol ( or alcohol ) goes into the petrol we buy at the forecourt , helping to decarbonise the UK transport sector .
The fermentation and distillation process also produces two important by-products – animal feed now enriched with the protein needed by farmers plus high-purity carbon dioxide essential to the food and drinks industry and other sectors .
Biffa Polymers Biffa Polymers has been active at Wilton International for more than 20 years and employs 180 people locally .
The company focuses on circularity to produce polyolefin and polyester pellet from recycled materials rather than directly from fossil resources .
Biffa ’ s recent investment and expansion at the site , using state-ofthe-art compounding and optical sorting technology , now allows around 1.5bn empty HDPE ( high-density polyethylene ) milk bottles to be recycled each year . The bottles are cleaned , shredded , sorted and processed to produce only the highest food-grade quality material that is suitable to produce new milk bottles once more .
Looking ahead Wilton International has a bright future , being ideally positioned to capitalise on the ambitions of the Teesside Industrial Cluster . Sembcorp is committed to helping existing customers reduce their carbon emissions and has the space to welcome new businesses .
