At Punch Robson , you are not just another face – you are part of a family .”

training contract has been replaced by the Solicitors Qualifying Exam ( SQE ). Under this new system , individuals can qualify as solicitors by passing the SQE after gaining the equivalent of two years ’ experience working in a law firm , whether as a paralegal or in another capacity . This represents a fundamental shift in the qualification process , making it more accessible and flexible for aspiring solicitors of all ages , genders and backgrounds .
The changes come at a critical time , as Elaine foresees a potential shortage of legal professionals in the region if not addressed promptly .
“ I do believe there could be a shortage of lawyers on Teesside if we don ’ t address this issue ,” she admits .
“ Due to the pandemic and the rise of flexible working , many professionals have left the area to join large city firms , specifically those in London , where remote work is more feasible . Unfortunately , smaller firms like ours struggle to compete with this trend .”
However , there are significant benefits to working at an independent firm , as Elaine explains : “ At Punch Robson , you are not just another face – you are part of a family .
“ We genuinely care about each other , we prioritise career progression and really take care of our team , yet the financial rewards can also be substantial , especially if you become an equity partner , with the potential for significant earnings .”
Punch Robson ’ s people-centric approach is already yielding significant results , with several rising stars already making their mark at the Ingleby Barwick headquartered firm .
“ Abigail McManus , who is part of my
team , started with us as a secretary two years ago ,” says Elaine .
“ Last January , I transitioned her into a paralegal role and later offered her a training contract . She is part of the last intake under the traditional training contract system , and due to her exceptional work , she only needs to complete 18 months to qualify with us , which is fantastic .”
Andrew Nolan , a paralegal litigator in partner John Wilkin ’ s team ( head of litigation and employment law ), studied at Newcastle University and the University of Law , completing a politics and economics degree and a diploma in law . He is currently working on completing the SQE .
Additionally , Helen Daly , who joined Punch Robson as a paralegal in the family team last October , is also working towards qualification with the firm ’ s support . George Robinson , who is part of Elaine ’ s team , joined last July , just before his graduation . “ He has shown exceptional performance , and we are supporting him to qualify as a solicitor ,” says Elaine .
Another notable example is Mia Coultas who qualified on May 1 . Mia started as a paralegal with Punch Robson just over three years ago and began a training contract , completing it in just 18 months due to her previous experience . She has already been offered a position as a newly qualified solicitor in Punch Robson ’ s family team .
At Punch Robson , the focus on retention and growth is paramount and , as is evident , the firm believes in recognising and nurturing talent within the team .
“ Our growth strategy is firmly rooted in retaining talent and supporting our team members ’ professional development ,” continues Elaine .
“ Rather than just offering traditional training contracts , we bring individuals into the firm , allowing them to experience the culture to see how they fit in . By offering opportunities for career development and supporting team members through their qualification process , we ensure that they have the tools they need to succeed .”
Shannon Whyatt , yet another “ outstanding ” team member , embodies this ethos . Encountering obstacles in her previous position due to limited opportunities in her preferred field , Shannon was welcomed to Punch Robson during the pandemic .
Shannon carried out her training with a firm who did not carry out any contentious work . She therefore joined Punch Robson to carry out a litigation seat as part of her training , working alongside John Wilkin . She swiftly demonstrated her skills and commitment , and after qualifying , Shannon chose to approach the firm , and joined as a solicitor . She showcased her adaptability by transitioning to the wills , probate , and trusts team . Her dedication and enthusiasm recently earned her a promotion to the position of associate .
Shannon ’ s success story clearly underscores Punch Robson ’ s commitment to recognising and supporting talent within the ranks , ensuring a bright future for both team members and the firm .
