Improving indoor air quality in your commercial property can improve productivity , reduce the need for costly repairs and boost energy efficiency . Aircon Group ’ s design and contracts manager Stephen Laverick was assigned to a retrofit project at three large office blocks on a site in Peterlee .
The first element of the project was to make changes to an existing variable refrigerant flow system , ensuring the heating and cooling was running effectively for a new tenant moving into one of the buildings .
Aircon Group started rectifying the faults , flows and leaks on the existing heating and hot water system and a new pressurisation unit was installed .
The next element of the project was replacing a water chiller the client had removed from the roof . It had used a hired water chiller throughout the summer , but a permanent solution was needed .
Design calculations indicated that two Mitsubishi Electric E-Series water chillers would be required to achieve the most ambient conditions . Installing multiple chillers increases resilience and the need for back-up systems is reduced .
The water chillers had to be lifted by crane onto the roof and positioned in place . New pipework was installed , new valves fitted and the water chillers were commissioned for use .
Another building on the site faced similar issues , with the water chiller failing at the start of the summer months . A further order was placed for two more Mitsubishi Electric E-Series water chillers and the process was followed again .

a café , a library and open-plan shared spaces , all of which had to be taken into consideration when undertaking the design calculations .
