The UK base of global chemical giant SABIC is right here on Teesside . Its Teesside operations include a world-scale LDPE ( lower density polyethylene ) plant , ethane feedstock cracker , logistics , jetties and storage facilities , giving employment to more than 300 staff , 400 contractors and hundreds more in the supply chain .

It ’ s estimated that SABIC ’ s existence here is worth £ 400m to the local economy from utilities , goods , services and salaries . But that ’ s not where it stops .
As a key employer in Teesside , SABIC ’ s senior management team believes it has a responsibility to be at the heart of the community .
As a result , the range of corporate and social responsibility ( CSR ) activity the firm undertakes with local stakeholders is vast , taking the form of sponsorships , donations , in-kind contribution and volunteering .
There are four priority focus areas , each linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals : * Environmental protection * Science and technology education * Health and wellbeing * Social giving Here is just a sample of the activity undertaken by the company on Teesside during 2023 .
Environmental activity SABIC has been a corporate member of RSPB Saltholme for more than 15 years , providing more than £ 80,000-worth of water annually , which is pumped on demand to the nature reserve from the firm ’ s North Tees site .
The company also provides volunteers to undertake a range of environmental work on the reserve . Last autumn a group spent a day cutting back invasive shrubs and made a donation of £ 2,000 to buy gardening equipment for the RSPB ’ s own regular volunteer group .
Flood protection In recent years , the company has made a multimillion-pound contribution to enable a £ 16m flood defence scheme to be completed at Port Clarence .
The aim of the project was to protect residents and businesses from flooding , but in addition it has enhanced the natural environment and created 50 acres of new habitat for birds and wildlife .
Beach cleaning and sponsoring of equipment SABIC has sponsored a third litter-picking cabinet in the Redcar & Cleveland area . The latest one , costing £ 2,500 , is situated near South Gare to support the work of the South Gare Litter Pickers .
