How bp-backed schemes can provide workforce for the future

POWERING AHEAD

WORDS : DAVE ROBSON
Futureproof – The Teesside Clean Energy Technician Scholarship is a full-time engineering course focusing on green industries and delivered at Redcar and Cleveland College ’ s impressive new hub .

It ’ s behind some of the most exciting new energy developments on Teesside – but bp is also ahead of the game when it comes to developing skills for those projects . In the next few years , the global energy giant plans four major projects on Teesside : Net Zero Teesside Power ( NZT Power ), a world-leading carbon capture energy facility for which the government has just granted development consent approval , along with H2Teesside , HyGreen Teesside and the NEP ( Northern Endurance Partnership ).

Between them , around 5,000 construction jobs could be created , plus hundreds more once they are in operation .
But to ensure the area ’ s skill set is up to the task , bp has been working collaboratively to help get the region up to speed with the skills that will be needed .
The company ’ s UK skills partnership manager , Tom Thayer , has looked at what the company needs in terms of people and skills for the operation and construction of the projects .
Education – Launched by bp in collaboration with Redcar and Cleveland College and local schools , the Enthuse Partnership aims to develop a collaborative approach to STEM subject teaching .
