Teesside surveyor ‘ blown away ’ to be shortlisted in RICS Awards 2023
A
Teesside surveyor is delighted to have reached the finals of the prestigious Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors Matrics Surveyor Awards 2023 .
Neil Trewick , director of Trew Surveying , was shortlisted in the Residential Property Surveyor of the Year category .
Organised by the Royal Institution of Charted Surveyors , known as RICS , these national awards showcase the exceptional talent within the surveying profession in the UK and recognise those who have demonstrated excellence early in their careers .
The Residential Property Surveyor of the Year award rewards the outstanding talent of an individual who achieves exceptional results and provides quality customer service .
The awards are now in their 10th year and competition across the 11 categories is tough .
Although he didn ’ t win when the gala awards ceremony was held in October at the Londoner Hotel , Leicester Square , Neil , 38 , who lives in Ingleby Barwick with his wife , Lucy , and their dog , Olive , said : “ I was absolutely blown away when I heard I had been shortlisted .
“ This award is the Ballon d ’ Or of the surveying world , so to be recognised within the profession was a huge accolade and a real feather in the cap for our young business .”
Trew Surveying ’ s rise hasn ’ t gone unnoticed . Neil is proud to have been named Residential Building Surveying MD of the Year 2023 ( North East ) in the SME News Awards and Best Emerging Sole Trader and Surveyor 2023 ( North East England ) in the UK Enterprise Awards .
And he recently landed the Best New Sole Trader title in the Best New Tees Business Awards for the second year running , as well as Trew Surveying being shortlisted for the Best New Services Business .
Neil ’ s surveying story has been something of a rollercoaster , to say the least . Having been made redundant when his employer went into liquidation in March 2022 , Neil took the brave decision to start his own business . Just days later , Trew Surveying was open for business .
Neil recalled : “ I ’ d finished my Monday jobs for the firm I worked for and in the afternoon we all learned via a Zoom call that the company had gone into liquidation and we were unemployed . I was shocked .
“ It was only a month before I was due to get married , and not even the craziest person would set up his own business a month before his wedding , but it was just what I needed to do .
“ Due to the leads I was generating , I was quietly confident I could at least make a living . As it happens , it ’ s completely taken off , so I ’ m not complaining any more . Things happen for a reason !”
Eighteen months on from those whirlwind first weeks when Neil carried out surveys for free to help clients who had been affected by the liquidated company and lost their money , Trew Surveying is now an established local business .
Its growing brand is getting known through sponsorships with Ingleby Barwick Golf Club , Hurworth Albion Under-12s and Neil ’ s beloved Middlesbrough FC .
With Trew Surveying ’ s current growth and more than 1,000 surveys booked so far , Neil is already looking at how to expand .
He said : “ I ’ m currently carrying three people ’ s workload and I probably need an admin or accounts assistant , and in peak months , a second surveyor .
“ There also may be a second business coming soon in 2024 . Watch this space !”
