UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES £ 36.9M BIOS FACILITY

Ambitious plans to support the region ’ s healthcare needs were unveiled at an event showcasing Teesside University ’ s new £ 36.9m BIOS facility .

The newly opened BIOS , which boasts four floors of cutting-edge facilities for the science and clinical subjects , will transform the way health provision is delivered at Teesside University through digital and immersive learning .
State-of-the-art facilities include immersive simulation suites , operating theatres and a digital anatomy facility , enhancing the teaching and learning environment .
Teesside University ’ s vice-chancellor and chief executive , Professor Paul Croney OBE , shared the university ’ s vision to establish a new medical school at a showcase event .

Major firm launches Tees office base for solar project

Energy giant SSE Energy Solutions has launched an office base at Teesside International Airport as part of the company ’ s ambitious growth plans for the region .

The FTSE 100 company has signed a lease for a unit in the airport terminal , with staff now working from the location .
The agreement follows an announcement last month that SSE is to deliver a major solar power project at the airport .
The new office is part of a wider recruitment expansion across the Tees Valley by the company , providing opportunities and skills for workers from across the region .
Nehal Mehta , director of regions and social value with SSE Energy Solutions , said : “ As part of our ongoing commitment to the region we are opening an office hub at Teesside International Airport to help challenges experienced within our region ,” he said .
“ Health inequalities , including a lack of access to healthcare , make a considerable impact on not simply the health of individuals , but the health of our regional economy . It is imperative that this is rebalanced .”
Facilities at BIOS include a simulation suite to recreate emergency scenarios , replicas of both home and hospital settings , and super-labs for immersive learning .
With more than 5,000 sq m of bespoke teaching space , BIOS also houses an oral health laboratory , food science and food technology laboratories with industrystandard equipment , a clinical hospital ward and a biology suite .
The building , delivered by Wates Construction , is solely used by students , with no staff offices and all spaces dedicated to learning .

The first phase of the solar farm project is due to enter construction early next year and will see up to 3MW of solar generation initially installed to meet airport and local demand .
Teesside Hospice has thanked those who attended the third annual Best New Tees Business Awards for their generosity after £ 2,000 was raised at the recent celebration event .
Organised by Tees Business in association with headline sponsor Additional Lengths , the awards saw around 270 guests attend the Pavilion at Kirkleatham Walled Garden .
Awards were presented by a range of sponsors to 10 category winners following a speech by Debbie Coulson , the hospice ’ s director of income generation , and a charity collection in aid of Teesside Hospice as the event ’ s chosen charity .
Prizes were donated by Additional Lengths , Kirkleatham Walled Garden , Blind Tiger Events and Steel River Drinks .
Julie Burniston , head of corporate development at Teesside Hospice and a former Tees Business employee , said : “ We are overwhelmed by the generosity of those who attended the Best New Tees Business Awards and who so graciously donated to our cause .
“ The fact that people took a moment of their time to give while celebrating their own fantastic achievements on the night really sums up the culture of care and compassion we have come to associate with our region .”
Tees Business director Martin Walker added : “ We are proud to support Teesside Hospice as corporate partners and work with them as our chosen charity on one of our prestigious annual awards events .
