Cummins reports strong second quarter results
CGI IMAGES SHOW RAILWAY STATION ’ S FUTURE
New CGI shows how Darlington Railway Station ’ s £ 150m overhaul will include two new platforms and a new car park when the project is complete in 2025 .
Engineers have revealed new imagery of the station ’ s east side – with a striking walkway route via the roof arches of the old station .
The station redevelopment includes a multi-storey car park , transport interchange and gateway entrance connected to Central Park
Once finished , there will be secure parking for more than 600 cars , with disabled bays and electric car charging points available .
Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said : “ Giving Darlington the gateway it deserves is vital to its future and the wider region ’ s need for better connections .
“ It will also boost investment and
make our region even more attractive to investors .”
The project is seeing the combined authority , Network Rail , LNER , the Department for Transport and Darlington Council all play a role alongside main contractors BAM and Willmott Dixon .
Cllr Steve Harker , leader of Darlington Council and Tees Valley Combined Authority cabinet member for transport , said : “ I ’ m very pleased to see progress is continuing to improve access to Darlington for both business and leisure travellers .
“ This new CGI gives a good indication of how the new part of the station will mould with the old . When complete , I am confident that all our efforts will create a transport hub we can all be proud of .”
The overhaul is still on track to be complete in time for the 2025 Stockton and Darlington Railway bicentennial celebrations .
Cummins , which has been manufacturing in Darlington since 1965 , has revealed worldwide revenues of $ 8.6bn for the second quarter of 2023 , up 31 per cent from the same quarter in 2022 .
Sales in North America increased 31 per cent and international revenues increased 32 per cent because of the addition of Meritor and strong demand in most global markets .
Earnings before interest , taxes , depreciation and amortisation ( EBITDA ) in the second quarter were $ 1.3bn , or 15.1 per cent of sales , compared to $ 1.1bn , or 16.0 per cent of sales , a year ago . The company plans to continue to generate strong operating cash flow .
Google boss visits economic campus
Rishi Sunak welcomed Google CEO Sundar Pichai to the Darlington Economic Campus , now home to HM Treasury and six other key government departments .
The prime minister pledged to spend more time working in Darlington after kick-starting the move of government departments to the town in 2021 and now works from the building regularly .
Of the hundreds of government officials in Darlington , 80 per cent were recruited locally .
The planned move to a permanent base on Brunswick Street will allow the Darlington Economic Campus to expand even further , with more than 1,500 government jobs in a new purpose-built six-storey office .
Engineering consultancy opens new office after SeAH deal
An award-winning engineering consultancy company has revealed plans to develop a northern base after opening a new office at Innovation Central , Darlington .
Bristol-headquartered Clarkebond already has regional offices in London and Exeter and delivers engineering projects for industry , developers and governments across the world .
Now the company has put down roots in the North-East after a contract win to help deliver the SeAH Wind offshore wind monopile factory at Teesworks , which is part of the Teesside Freeport site .
Darlington-born Anthony Hoare has been appointed regional director and is responsible for developing the office to deliver a fully multi-disciplined civil and structural engineering service .
New unit will help shape government strategy
A new partnership between the government and Durham University will be based in Darlington .
The partnership with Durham University ’ s DREAM research centre will support the Microeconomics Unit within the Competition and Markets Authority at the Darlington Economic Campus .
The unit will play a central role in advancing economic research and drawing up key policies .
The partnership will work to identify opportunities for research collaboration and knowledge sharing .
The unit , along with nine other government departments and public bodies as part of the Darlington Economic Campus , is expected to offer job opportunities for people across the Tees Valley .
