Jenny Chapman , Teesside University A nationally prominent politician with a long history of support for social mobility and the positive impact of quality higher education is the first woman to be appointed as chancellor of Teesside University .
Baroness Chapman of Darlington , the former MP for Darlington and a leading figure within the Labour Party , will be officially installed as chancellor at a special ceremony later this year . Jenny represented her hometown between 2010 and 2019 , serving on the front benches in shadow minister roles .
In 2020 , she was made a life peer and sits in the House of Lords as the opposition cabinet spokesperson , as well as shadow minister of state at the Cabinet Office .
Throughout her career , Baroness Chapman has been a committed champion for the Tees Valley and campaigner for quality education , speaking in the Houses of Parliament on issues including student fees and the positive impact of universities within their local communities .
The appointment of Baroness Chapman as chancellor follows the appointment earlier this year of Ada Burns as the university ’ s first woman chair of the board of governors .
Nieve Morrison , Sunderland AFC The Power of Women ( PoW ) campaign ’ s former marketing officer has powered on to a role helping organise major events at Sunderland AFC .
Armed with a first-class marketing degree from Teesside University , Nieve Morrison – who had a placement with Tees Business publishers Resolution Media and Publishing during her PoW role – is now a major events and project coordinator at the Stadium of Light club .

22 , was involved in the behind-the-scenes organisation of major music concerts by pop megastars Beyonce and Pink .
Nieve , of Stockton , was quick to acknowledge the parts played in her career progression by Teesside University , Resolution and PoW – the campaign dedicated to raising the aspirations of young women across the Tees Valley .
She said : “ I had the pleasure of working for PoW over the last 18 months and it ’ s an amazing organisation .
“ I was given invaluable experiences and thoroughly enjoyed playing a part in lifting and shifting the aspirations of the next generation .
“ I ’ m also really grateful for everything Dave , Martin and the Resolution team did for me during my time there .
“ I was given some unbelievable experiences , such as seeing the professional way magazines like Tees Business were put together and attending some amazing awards ceremonies .”
Of her time studying for a BA ( Hons ) marketing degree at Teesside University ’ s International Business School , Nieve said : “ I chose to study marketing as I ’ ve always enjoyed English and wanted to combine this with something creative .
“ I had some amazing lecturers who really helped me during the degree and made me think about the career path I wanted to take . I also received support in arranging a placement , so I couldn ’ t have asked for a better experience .
“ The university ’ s facilities are great , especially the library . I would say to anyone thinking of applying to Teesside to definitely do it .”
