GREEN INNOVATION

FINALIST
FOLEY ’ S EQUESTRIAN SURFACES
Green credentials – Scott Bros director Peter Scott is handed the award for Green Innovation by Alison McGee or category sponsors Durata .
WINNER
SCOTT BROS
It ’ s a firm that ’ s been going green for at least 20 years – but haulage and plant hire director Peter Scott says industry in general has a lot of catching up to do . Peter , of Haverton Hill-based Scott Bros – experts in recycling , plant and haulage since 1971 – said green innovation is “ exactly what we ’ ve been trying to do for the past 20 years ”.
He explained : “ We fitted solar when they first came out , we went biomass , we do every sort of green innovation , things like carbon capture – we do everything organically . We don ’ t do it to try to be green – we try to do the right thing and I think that shows through in what we do as a company and our vision .
“ There ’ s a lot of catching up to do with the recycling industry throughout the north of England . Scotland and Northern Ireland are way ahead of us – I ’ m not doing anything special . I saw what they were doing and thought , ‘ That ’ s what needs to happen in the north of England ’ and I copied them .
“ The message is , ‘ Stop sending stuff to landfill if you can recycle it , remake it , repurpose it ’. Imagine you ’ re building a house and I dig out your foundations , wash them and sell you 80 per cent of those foundations back to build your next house – that ’ s what we do .”
He added : “ It ’ s nice – we ’ re a family business based on Teesside that ’ s been around for 50 years and it ’ s great to get some kind of recognition .”
And as for the future ? “ I ’ ve just had my first grandson , Archie , so my thoughts are building a brand that will last another 50 years .”
Based at Warrenby near Redcar , but with several processing sites across the UK , Foley ’ s Equestrian Surfaces processes and recycles a wide range of materials , including offcut automotive carpets , used astro pitches and sand , for use in the equestrian industry .
The company was set up at the start of the pandemic in a bid to help reduce landfill waste by researching possible recycling alternatives to the amount of surplus carpet waste being produced in the automotive industry .
By producing a safe , sustainable and horsesafe product , the business has gone from strength to strength , with two large contracts within the automotive industry secured and seven staff so far .
FINALIST PROTIUM
Protium – which is London-based but has a flagship green hydrogen project on Wilton Universal Group ’ s Port Clarence site – produces green hydrogen to help clients with their decarbonisation journey and so contribute towards the UK 2050 net zero targets .
Not only does Protium build green hydrogen infrastructure , but it also deploys green hydrogen technology . For example , Protium has deployed its first 100kW electrolyser that will enable the production of hydrogen without emitting greenhouse gases . This will allow Protium to generate electrolytic hydrogen at scale .
Building its Teesside facility will provide Protium with the infrastructure to generate renewable green hydrogen energy , with plans to supply local manufacturers once built .
